Residents warned to protect themselves against theft On the Wing The gentle grace of the butterfly flitting through the garden has often captured the heart of young old. Gardening to attract these gentle creatures has become a popular trend. Butterflies often appear to be just passing through, occasionally stopping for a drink of nectar but you can prolong the stay of these colourful visitors and draw in others by providing the food and shelter they need. Food for an adult butterfly usually consists of sweet liquids, such as nectar from flowers that provide energy. When planning a butterfly garden, create a large patch of each flower species you choose to attract and retain the butterflies. Choose some plants with larger flat-top flowers to create landing areas. Some great varieties to look for are Coreopsis, Yarrow, Delphinium, Butterfly Bush, and Butterfly Weed. Remember to use insecticides sparingly in your butterfly gardens as most are not compatible with the guests you are working so hard to invite. Create a little summer magic of your own and invite our winged friends to visit your backyard this year. Listen to Halton Regional Police are reminding residents to ensure their homes and valuables are properly secured this summer. This season is a time when, traditionally, opportunistic criminals take advantage of unlocked doors and windows. As a result, make sure that your ground floor doors and windows are properly closed and locked before you go to bed. Don't simply rely on window and door screens which can be easily cut. If you plan to work in the garden or splash in the backyard pool, make sure your garage and front doors are closed and locked. It doesn't take long for thieves to take your family's belongings everything from lawn equipment to golf clubs and bicycles. One of the most effective things you can do when you're away on your holidays is to ask neighbours and friends to watch your home for you. Arrange for your papers and mail to be picked up and consider motion lights or timers for your lights to give the appearance someone is home.
