www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 12, 2006 - 11 Long-term care homes need student volunteers Halton Region's long-term care homes -- Creek Way Village in Burlington, Allendale Village in Milton and Post Inn Village in Oakville -- are looking for Halton student volunteers. The Summer Student Volunteer Program provides young people an opportunity to learn about a variety of different careers, including recreation programming and hairdressing. Students can participate in recreational activities both in and outside the long-term care homes, such as helping in a recreation program like Bingo, assisting seniors to attend a concert or a play, or visiting with residents and clients. Volunteers also assist on outings, with clerical work and with the Adult Day Programs. This training provides students with a unique and rewarding perspective of working with seniors in their community. Students work Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a minimum of three weeks. Volunteers can apply their hours towards their community service requirements for graduation. There are also several evening and weekend programs available. Students who are interested in obtaining an information package or taking a tour of one of the homes should contact Halton Region at 905-825-6000, or toll free at 1-866-442-5866, ext. 4011. MADD memorial dedication July 23 MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Halton/Peel is encouraging victims of impaired driving, their loved ones and their friends regardless of where they live in the two regions - to show their support by attending a special ceremony in Oakville on Sunday, July 23. On that date at 1 p.m., MADD Halton/Peel will honour and remember victims by donating a bench to be displayed at Coronation Park. This memorial bench will serve as a symbol of tribute and respect for impaired driving victims. Organizers stress the importance of consistently raising the public's awareness to the senseless crime, loss and sorrow felt by many people in the aftermath of a tragic impaired driving car crash. MADD Canada is a national antiimpaired driving group, providing a voice for victims of impaired driving crimes. It is a non-profit organization of volunteers who include not only mothers, but fathers, friends, business professionals, experts in the anti-impaired driving field and concerned citizens who want to make a difference in the fight against impaired driving. For more information regarding attending this ceremony, call the MADD Halton/Peel chapter office at 905-8440096 or email: info@maddhalton.ca.
