Last week, it served as Timmins, Ontario during a three-day demo-tape shoot for Mid-Morning Men featuring Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club alumni Mike Wilmot and Derek Edwards. In the demo tape commissioned by the Comedy Network, Wilmot and Edwards play the hosts of a mid-morning show on Timmins, Ontario's fictional radio station CQCQ radio. "The whole series revolves around these guys talking on the radio, and we cut to their adventures," said producer and Oakville resident, Tim Progosh. "Derek is from a small town, and this is his pinnacle, to be in Timmins on the radio. Mike's a failed novelist from the big city. He's on his way down in his career, Derek's on his way up, and they meet in the middle." Vice president of the Toronto-based Higher Ground Productions, Progosh has known Wilmot and Edwards since they all performed as amateurs at Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club in the 1980s. "Mike and Derek have been friends for 20 years, and we came up with this idea for a TV show that would allow them to be themselves," said Progosh. "They're two of the funniest guys in the world, and they've created this very funny world in Timmins that the show is based on. Basically, it's looking through the eyes of Mike and Dave at this town and the weird characters and the weird politics and weird events that go on there." Both recipients of Canadian Comedy Awards, Wilmot and Edwards wrote the script and with Higher Ground Productions on board, showed it to the Comedy Network. "The network said, `Why don't you do a demo. We need it right away,'" said Progosh, who's produced a number of shows, including CMT's Flashback, and is also the creator and producer of the Canadian Comedy Awards. "The show is funny. Very funny," he added, noting it can't be compared to any other shows LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER MID-MORNING TALK: Actors Dwayne Hill, Jayne Eastwood, Mike Wilmot and Derek Edwards rehearse a scene in front of Sammy's Old Fashion Chip Wagon in Bronte for Mid-Morning Men, a situation comedy about a fictional radio talk show in Timmins, Ontario. Last week's film shoot was to produce a demo-tape for consideration by The Comedy Network. on the air. "These guys talk about everything on the air, like how much insurance you'd get if you cut off a toe, and which one would be worth the most." The demo, which is also for CTV, was shot over the course of three days, one of which was spent in Oakville. Bronte's Legion Hall serves as one of Timmins' hotspots. "It's where Mike and Dave, when they're not on the air, come to hang out and drink," said Progosh, adding the Legion hall provides oneNew ! n Locatio man variety shows and other quirky entertainment for Timmins residents. The crew also shot some scenes at Sammy's Old Fashion Chip Wagon, which was used as `The Mobile Marmeladium' in an episode guest-starring Jayne Eastwood, one of the original cast members of Second City, as its owner. "She's convinced everyone in Timmins that everybody should eat marmalade, and she's carved this niche," Progosh said of the episode. "Mike thinks it's crazy and Derek thinks it's an acquired taste." Eastwood's character sells crust-less bread and bread fingers dipped in marmalade, and also started selling soup in a glass something she thinks is innovative, but it's only burning the mouths of her customers. The Marmeladium owner is just one of a cast of wacky Timmins characters Wilmot and Edwards encounter and discuss on their midmorning radio show on CQCQ, tag-lined `Great. Northern.
