32 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 12, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Buzz stars come through in series finale Morley cards low Oakville advances to gross at Kiwi stop second round of Jr. B lacrosse playoffs By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF There are two paths to playoff success -- teams can either win with depth or teams can have their leaders carry them to victory. Just three games into the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B playoffs, the Oakville Buzz has proven to be capable of both. The Buzz built a 2-0 edge in its bestof-five series with the Halton Hills Bulldogs by getting offensive contributions from everyone. Seven different players combined for 11 goals in the opener while nine players found the mark in a 14-2 victory in Game 2. Saturday, looking to complete the sweep of the Bulldogs, Oakville's top three scorers combined for seven goals and 13 points in a 9-4 triumph. Chris Moulson paced the Buzz with three goals and two assists while Brenden Thenhaus and Josh Smyth each had two goals and two assists. "Moulson is a tremendous big-game player," Buzz head coach Glen Little said. "Those guys led us." For the second game in a row, Halton Hills got into early penalty trouble and the Buzz pounced on the opportunity, scoring three times in the opening period and extending its lead to 6-0. Oakville was not immune to its own discipline problems as Halton Hills narrowed the gap to 7-4 in the third. "We let them back in with some stupid penalties," Little said. "We relaxed a little and coasted from the 10-minute mark of the second." Oakville was not about to let the lead slip away, however, adding a pair of insurance goals to improve to 12-0 at home this season. Reed Board and Jordan MacIntosh also scored for the Buzz while Sean Thomson had a pair of assists. The Buzz will now meet the Scarborough Saints in the second round. The Saints, like Halton Hills, were 10-10 during the regular season. Scarborough upset Akwesasne 13-7 in the fifth and deciding game of its series on Sunday. In the other East Conference series, Mimico defeated the Green Gaels in four games while Barrie also needed four games to beat Markham. The Oakville/Scarborough series will open Sunday at Maplegrove Arena at 7 p.m. -- Herb Garbutt can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com. Jim Morley fired the low gross score amongst adult players at the Kiwi Tour's latest stop, held Saturday at Kitchener's Rockway Golf Course. Morley recorded a 75 and finished in a first-place tie in the `A' flight with a Stableford-adjusted score of 66. Tim Hatton, also of Oakville, placed second in the `B' flight with an adjusted score of 69. Several other local golfers enjoyed success at the tour's previous stop, last Tuesday (July 4) at Wildwinds Golf Course near Fergus. Janet Calderone, Hatton and Nik Klemarow finished third in the adult `A', `B' and `C' flights, respectively. Mikey Thomson finished second and Jordan Bollinger third in the tyke (11-and-under) division. The next Kiwi stop is scheduled for Monday, July 17 at Osprey Valley near Alton. Osprey was the site of The Golf Town Tour's G&G Shootout earlier this month, where Al Duncan tied for third in the adult `B' flight and stretched his Order of Merit lead to 65 points over Richmond Hill's Boris Fong. That tour continues July 18 at Taboo Resort in Gravenhurst.
