www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 12, 2006 - 33 Senior COBA A's win tournament title in London Trying to build its way to elite status in the Central Ontario Baseball Association, the Oakville A's senior baseball team saw some encouraging signs last weekend. The A's won their first tournament in a number of years, capturing the London Senior title by posting a 5-0 record -- three of those victories coming by a one-run margin. STRAIGHT A's: The Oakville minor mosquito A's baseball team won its own tournament last weekend, posting wins in all five of its games. Oakville clinched the title with a 20-10, extra-inning victory over the Burlington Bulls. Games were played at Bronte Athletic Field, River Oaks Park and Millbank Park. BASEBALLBRIEFS Steve Williamson had the game-winning hit in the ninth inning as the A's edged the league rival Milton Red Sox 6-5 in the championship game. Marc Walton earned the win on the mound, pitching a pair of innings and striking out the final Milton batter with the tying run at third base and the go-ahead run at second. Oakville rallied from an early 4-0 deficit after Milton touched up A's ace Gord Robertson for a pair of two-run frames. In the semifinal, Julian Richards pitched a complete game as the A's shut down East York 6-1. Robertson had three steals and Carter Buchanan swiped two bases for Oakville, which stole eight in total, while Lou Vassos and Walton contributed excellent defensive plays. The A's began the tournament with a 5-4, extra-inning win over Exeter as Walton singled home Matt Griffin for the winning run. They then defeated Barrie Simcoe 6-5, keyed by an extrainning double by Richards, and rode the strong pitching of Matt Chisamore to a 5-2 victory over Listowel in the quarter-final. Nine players on Oakville's roster are in their first or second year with their club. Other players on the team include Matt Bekar, John Holden, Mike Kennedy, Andrew Kotulak, Glen Payne, Derek Pogue, Mike Sansone and Tyler Weech. The A's are managed by Carlos Paixao and coached by Rob Fisher. Oakville clinched the title with a 20-10 victory over the Burlington Bulls in the final, a contest that was much closer than the score indicated. The teams played three extra innings and the A's survived a dangerous Bulls rally, in which Burlington loaded the bases with one out, before exploding for 10 runs in the 10th inning. During the round-robin, Oakville defeated the Brampton Royals, Pickering Red Sox and another Burlington Bulls squad. The A's then defeated the Markham Mariners in the semifinal, a rematch of last season's provincial championship. The tournament was run by the Oakville Minor Baseball Association, with games played at Bronte Athletic Field, River Oaks Park and Millbank Park. Members of the champion A's squad are Andrew Yancan, A.J. Smith, Lee Joch, Alex Fulton, David Rankin, Thomas Radigan, Graeme Rourke, Keenan Lutzko, Kyle Carey, Daniel Ohorodnyk, John Whaley and Jason Provost. Pair of wins for Little League major Phillies Playing some of their most fundamentally-sound baseball of the season, the Oakville Little League major Phillies won both ends of their doubleheader Saturday at Cornwall Park. The Phillies downed the White Sox 10-8 in their first game of the day, then followed with an 11-6 triumph over the Blue Jays. Kevin McClain sparked the Phillies in the opener, driving in three runs with a pair of hits. Ben Ten-Yuk delivered the big blow in the Phillies' win over the Blue Jays, clubbing a threerun triple. Dennis McLeod earned the save in both games, while Connor Chilton pitched two scoreless innings.
