www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 14, 2006 - 13 The Y has a fever for fitness Build the Fireplace of Your Dreams! T here are many things that we are proud of at the YMCA of Oakville, and high on that list is our commitment to excellence in training and fitness for our dedicated employees. Our zest for exceptional training reached a `feverish' high on July 8 - 9, as we hosted an Ontario YMCA fitness training conference at Appleby College for the third year in a row - Fitness Fever. Fitness Fever was a weekend of intense training for 181 YMCA fitness leaders from the far reaches of Ontario. Other fitness training events exist, but none fit the YMCA need for an event that would focus not only on technical fitness training, but more importantly, on the fostering of our YMCA vision and values. As required by YMCA Canada Leadership certification standards, all certified fitness leaders must complete 16 hours of on-going education workshops within a two-year period. "Fitness Fever was much more than a fitness training weekend," said YMCA of Oakville Supervisor of Health and Fitness, Jeanette Heywood. "Our focus was on relationship-building with our members. Research has shown that when a person comes to us, they have fitness goals in mind, but really they want to feel as if they belong. They don't necessarily want complex choreography they want to work hard, master what they are doing, have fun and be accepted for who they are. We want to help our members on all three levels spirit, mind and body." Keynote speaker Giselle Tenant, of Y Canada, spoke on Relationship Building to all participants. She stressed the importance of investing in the Y's fitness leaders in order to help Y members to make a life-long commitment to themselves and their health. In many cases, building selfesteem is a key component that helps people maintain their focus. Many fitness workshops were also incorporated into the event it's important to keep all of those fitness trainers in shape and give them the tools that they need to do fabulous fit- ness training. Workshops ran both on Saturday and Sunday and included everything from `Barbell Blast' to cycling, circuit training and aquatic fitness. An African theme social night kept the trainers moving and added lots of fun to their weekend. When asked what she was most proud of related to Fitness Fever, Jeanette said, "I am so proud of the team that brought this event to life and the great feedback that they received from all of our Y trainers. We wanted to make the trainers feel special and valued by the Y."
