www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 14, 2006 - 17 CCARE walk/run for Guatemala relief Walk/Run for the Children of the Merendon Mountains in Guatemala on Saturday Aug. 26. Canada Central America Relief Effort (CCARE), founded by Hilda Rossi of Oakville, is holding its 4th annual fivekilometre Run/Walk at Spencer Smith Park, Lakeshore Road and Brant Street in Burlington. The event will start at 9:30 a.m. Registration is at 8 a.m. To register online go to www.vrpro.ca or see www.runningroom.ca. CCARE needs volunteers and participants. Proceeds will support the agency's ongoing relief work in Guatemala. So far this year, CCARE has opened the Multi Skill Center in Volcancito and visited the villages damaged by Hurricane Stan in the Pacific Coast to explore future projects in the area. Maria Carmen Romero, the Education Team Leader, opened three libraries and has given educational seminars to the teachers of the 36 villages in the Merendon Mountains. Heidi Grover led the dental team during six intensive days of dental treatment to a total of 634 patients. "But there is so much more CCARE wants to do for the communities of the Merendon Mountains of Guatemala and we need your help," said Rossi, the relief agency's director. CCARE, originally known as the Halton and Peel Central America Relief Effort (HPCARE) emerged over seven years ago in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch in Central America in November 1998. Its mandate is to work on health, education, reconstruction and community development initiatives, leading toward a self-sustainable community. The Rotary Club Mississauga-Airport has supported this initiative with the building of the community centre/health clinic in Timushan. This non-government organization (NGO) was born on the heels of the huge natural disaster that was Hurricane Mitch in 1998. Hurricane Mitch ripped though Central America destroying villages, killing more than 9,000 people and leaving more that one million homeless. After a trip to Guatemala, Rossi, who wa born in Guatemala and her friend, Rosie DeBiasi, saw the devastation and upon their return CCARE was born. In 2003, its first team of 33 volunteers from all parts of Ontario went to Guatemala to begin the relief effort. Each year the mission team has grown and the work transitioned from humanitarian aid to an increased focus on sustainable development. Since 2003, CCARE has initiated a number of economic development projects including a community store and a chicken production facility. "This will provide an important source of nutrition for the local people as well as an economic benefit through the sale of eggs," said Rossi. CCARE's next trip is in March 2007. Water Wisdom With summer water restrictions becoming more frequent Xeriscaping or what is more commonly referred to as water wise gardening is something that we as gardeners are becoming more aware of and the topic of this week's TERRA Trend. There are a number of things that gardeners can do to keep on planting but limit the amount of water that is being used in the garden. First of all when planting a garden try to keep plants together that like the same light and moisture conditions. Some great plants to try in hot, dry locations are lavender, thrift, sedums, spirea, and rose of sharon. When watering your garden, be sure to do so in the morning or the evening when it's not as hot to help avoid evaporation. The best thing you can do to retain moisture is cover the soil with an organic mulch 2 to 3 inches deep, this will also help keep the weeds down.
