Around 7 a.m. she will take the plunge from the Port Carling Boatworks for the 22kilometer swim, which ends at the town docks in Rosseau. Last year's effort ­ which Greene described as "brutal" ­ took eight hours and 42 minutes to complete. It's all worthwhile, however, since the beneficiary is Camp Oochigeas, moved from Oakville after 33 years to Novar, just north of Huntsville - was originally inspired to tackle the swim by her godmother's granddaughter Traci who, in 1995, was diagnosed with leukemia at age 10. Today, Traci remains in remission. Over time, Greene's commitment has never waned and one year she made the swim in nine hours and 14 minutes with a broken hand. Greene has also been rewarded with other triumphs, like in 2004 when she raised her most ever: more than $25,000, or enough to send nine children to camp for two weeks. Humble as ever, Greene's Joy Green Canada's first residential cancer camp. Greene ­ who last year goal this July 22 is to send a minimum of three campers. For more than 22 years, Camp Oochigeas - "Camp Ooch," as it's affectionately known - has been providing hope, self-esteem and personal growth for thousands of children affected with cancer. It offers them much needed fun and friendship along with excellent healthcare. Camp Oochigeas is also the only residential camping facility in Ontario to offer IV chemotherapy treatment and blood transfusions on site, so even children in the intense phase of their cancer therapy can still experience camp. During the past year, more than 200 children with cancer participated in a variety of camp programs at no cost to their families. As a registered charity that does not receive government funding, Camp Oochigeas relies on the generosity of donors in order to provide these children with a magical camp experience. Walking tour of downtown The Oakville Historical Society's popular two-hour guided historical walking tours continue during the summer. The Main Street of Old Oakville, will be held Wednesday, July 26 at 7 p.m., and continues Sundays, Sept 10 and Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. This guided tour focuses on Oakville's commercial district from Navy Street to Trafalgar Road.
