34 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 19, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Big Brothers Big Sisters awarded Bell sport grant Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton has been awarded a $5,000 Bell Community Sport Fund grant to improve access to local youth sports. The organization plans to use the money to register its members in local hockey and soccer programs, provide transportation as required and develop an equipment loan program to reduce participation barriers. The grant will be officially presented Saturday at Glen Abbey Park as local members will participate in the KIDS N KOPS baseball game. A number of Bell Canada representatives will be in attendance, as will former Olympian and Bell Community Sport Fund Ambassador Jody Holden. The Bell Community Sport Fund will distribute $1 million in grants over two phases in 2006. In phase one, the fund distributed a total of $445,000 to 65 Canadian communities -- including 37 in Ontario -- to improve access to youth hockey and soccer programs. There is still time for other organizations in Oakville to SPORTSBRIEFS apply for a grant. The application deadline for the final phase is Sept. 15, 2006. Raiders basketball tryouts begin Monday Seven local athletes are part of the 283-member team that is representing Ontario at this week's Special Olympics Canadian National Summer Games in Brandon, Manitoba. Emily Boycott, Elisha Donaghey-Johnston and Shannon Ross are competing in rhythmic gymnastics, Matthew DuffTyler and Kathy Ashwell are playing soccer, A.J. Schamerhorn is participating in softball and Kelly Hoyle is 10-pin bowling. Athletes, ranging in age from 12-55 years, have dedicated many hours training for the Games, which also feature powerlifting, aquatics, track and field and 5-pin bowling. Ontario athletes are not only aiming for gold, they are also vying for a spot on the Canadian team for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China. The mission of the Special Olympics is to enrich the lives of Canadians with intellectual disabilities through sport. Lake Ontario 300 sets sail at local squadron Oakville Yacht Squadron will host the Lake Ontario 300 tomorrow (Thursday), the longest offshore yacht race held on Lake Ontario. The race is an international event and is considered the toughest of the four Great Lakes long-distance races. Action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. The spinnaker fleet will sail a 300-nautical-mile circumnavigation of the lake, beginning in Oakville and with checkpoints at Gibraltar Point/Toronto, Whitby, Main Duck Island, Youngstown and Burlington. The white sail fleet will do a 300-kilometre circuit (approximately 150 nautical miles) with stops everywhere but Main Duck Island.
