www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 21, 2006 - 9 New Halton Healthcare Chief of Staff is familiar face Dr. Lorne Martin, former chief of staff for Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) and the first chief of staff for Halton Healthcare Services (HHS), has been renamed to the position of chief of staff for HHS as of Sept. 1. Martin will replace Dr. Sol Stern who announced his intention to step down last January. "We thank Dr. Stern for the valuable contribution that he has made to HHS and look forward to working with Dr. Martin again," said Murray Paton, chair of the HHS board. Stern is stepping down to free up time for other activities, including continuing medical education, his private clinical practice in Oakville and his family. Martin was chief of staff from 1994 to 2001 and most recently has been medical director of Emergency Services at OTMH. Martin will continue in the role of medical director of Emergency Services at OTMH while in the role of Chief of Staff for HHS. "Dr. Stern has provided exceptional guidance to the senior team and the board of directors through some very challenging times and issues, including SARS, physician recruitment and development, balancing quality of clinand was re-appointed in Oct. 2004 after his first three-year term. The Chief of Staff Search Committee, that included board members, senior staff and medical staff, began its search for a new chief of staff in February 2006 and reported having a number of excellent candidates. Martin joined the active medical staff of the Department of Family Medicine at OTMH in 1983. He became Medical Director of Emergency Services in 1992, and was appointed Chief of Staff of OTMH in 1994. He chaired a number of committees including the Medical Advisory Committee, Clinical Equipment Priorities Committee and the Credentials Committee, and was an active member on a multitude other committees -- such as the Board Governance, Board Quality and Strategic Planning. "Dr. Martin provided tremendous leadership and excellent advice to the board on issues regarding medical services to the hospital during his previous tenure as chief of staff," said John Oliver, HHS President and CEO. "He was instrumental during the amalgamation of our Milton and Oakville hospital sites and has always been an articulate advocate of emergency medicine," said Oliver. "It is a very exciting time for Halton Healthcare now that our reach has been extended in the Halton Region with the transfer of Georgetown Hospital. Responding to the unprecedented growth of our communities is definitely one of our major challenges," said Martin. "I'd like to see HHS continue to build on the existing excellent working relationships, and function as one cohesive organization to expand services and maximize the quality of care for the region. However, I think each hospital should be supported in maintaining its unique culture throughout this process; it enhances our ability to provide the best possible care to our patients," said Martin. In 1998, Martin played a critical role in the Health Services Restructuring Commission and directed amalgamation of OTMH and Milton District Hospital (MDH) into HHS. Martin rewrote the medical, midwifery and dental staff bylaws, and rules and regulations, which integrated the medical staff from the two hospitals and established a new medical staff structure.
