www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 21, 2006 - 7 Region says deal achieves significant environmental gains Continued from page 1 Halton -- with help from the Town of Oakville and Conservation Halton -- investigated the tree-cutting and announced the deal late yesterday. Regional officials said the settlement achieves significant environmental gains. The investigation was launched after Ward 4 Councillor and Conservation Halton member Allan Elgar discovered the tree cutting while showing out-of-town guests around town. The investigation found that ClubLink had removed trees from the forested slopes of the Sixteen Mile Creek Valley in an ESA. "The proposed settlement and agreement produces a clear net environmental gain and truly reflects the intent and purpose of the Region's Tree By-Law program -- to educate landowners about the importance of conducting good forestry practices in the region." Halton Director of Planning and Transportation Services, Jane Clohecy Halton Region conducted the investigation under Halton's new Tree Bylaw. The bylaw adopted in 2005, and implemented via a January 2006 Woodlands Stewardship Program, prohibits and regulates the destruction or injuring of trees in Halton. The bylaw applies to all woodlots greater than half a hectare or environmentally sensitive lands designated in the Regional Greenlands system. Violators may face significant fines, restoration orders, or both. Fines can be as high as $1,000 per tree for individuals and $5,000 per tree for corporations. Halton Region had not issued a permit to allow tree cutting on the Dorval Drive golf course. "Throughout this investigation process, ClubLink has been co-operative and has expressed its commitment to restoring the disturbed areas, to providing additional compensation by way of enhanced tree cover at the Glen Abbey Golf Course and to conduct all future maintenance operations in an environmentally-sensitive manner," said Halton's Director of Planning and Transportation Services, Jane Clohecy. "The proposed settlement and agreement produces a clear net environmental gain and truly reflects the intent and purpose of the Region's Tree By-law program See ClubLink page 11 · Brochures · Catalogues · Annual Reports · Publications · Newsletters · Tabloids · Flyers · Magazines · Newspapers · Presentation Folders · Specialty Products · Fast Courteous Service Call Robert Butt or Ralph Ingraham for a professional consultative approach to your printing needs. 905. 845. 4549 · drapery + hardware · custom sewing + furniture · in-home consultation · W E ' V E R A I S E D T H E C U R TA I N Our "Luxury To GoTM" ready-made drapery collection is exquisitely designed and ready to hang.
