BEFORE 7 99* PER $11. 9 9 WEEK 80 Cami lost * lbs* For $100 travel back in time and halfway around the world to meet some famous folk, without having to pack or leave town. This vicarious trip is courtesy of photographer Paul Saltzman and the soul-searching week he spent with The Beatles in India, in 1968. Next Wednesday, Aug. 2, Saltzman shows half of the 54 photos he took of the Fab Four, as part of a fundraising event at The Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate. He'll also share the stories that go along with that meditative time. To replicate Saltzman's experience as best as possible there'll be live performances by Alan Frew and Jim Witter covering songs from The Beatles' The White Album, Indian fare and VQA wines by Flat Rock Cellars and Indian King Fisher Beer. Only 200 passengers (tickets) are allowed on board this heady trip. Proceeds raised from the event support Kidsfest Canada, a charity that helps children from low-income families educationally. "It was a life changing experience for me," said Saltzman. In more ways than his brush with fame. Back then, the 24-year-old headed to the religious compound where transcendental meditation founder and guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi lived. Saltzman went there to produce a National Film Board piece on the practice but found himself drawn to learn the discipline, as a way to mend a broken heart. (Just before he left on the trip to India, he was devastated by a break up with a girlfriend.) He had no idea George, John, Paul and Ringo would be there at the same time. So were Mia Farrow, Donovan and Mike Love. For this reason, Saltzman wasn't allowed into the gated community in Rishikesh. "I slept outside the ashram for eight days before they let me in." The "magical" experience that resulted is for 200 pairs of eyes to see and hear about, at The Oakville Museum next week. It was the grounding period in India that would prove the most prolific for The Beatles. The foursome wrote 48 songs in fewer than eight weeks.
