Squirt, novice Angels win own invitational tournament One team did it in dominant fashion while the other had to sweat it out, but both the Oakville Angels squirt 1 and novice tier 1 (Wamsley) fastpitch teams won their invitational tournament earlier this month at Trafalgar Park. The squirt Angels won all five of their games, outscoring their opponents 55-3 and clinching the title with a 5-0 blanking of Kitchener in the final. Meanwhile, the novices finished second in their pool with a 3-1 mark, then won two onerun games to advance to the championship game before downing the Brantford Bobcats 4-1. Squirt Brittany Parkes and Alex Sagl combined to allow a mere six hits and five walks in 24 innings, striking out 55 batters in the process, and pitched two no-hitters during the tournament. Oakville set the tone for the tournament in the first inning of its opening game. The Angels' first seven batters reached base and eventually scored as Oakville rolled to a 13-run inning and went on to rout Waterloo 14-2. Nova Bozinoski and Sagl hit two-run home runs, with Jennifer Simpson, Hilary Dawe, Dana Ball and Abbey Fong contributing a pair of hits each. The Angels' early-game prowess continued in their second match as they scored 14 times in the first two innings against Whitby. Every member of the team scored a run in Oakville's 16-0 mercy-shortened win. Hits were at a premium in the Angels' final round-robin game versus Kitchener, a preview of the title contest. Oakville made the most of its three hits, scoring twice in the third inning as Jennifer Wilcox doubled home Sagl and then scored on a wild pitch. Kitchener scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth but the Angels held on for a 2-1 victory. In the semifinal, Parkes pitched three hitless innings, had three hits of her own and drove in a run to lead the Angels to an 18-0 win over Whitby. Crystal Marentette went 3-for-3 with five RBI and scored twice, Sagl and Wilcox each scored three times and Jocelyn Carabott, Kelly Locke and Bozinoski scored twice apiece. Sagl was dominant in the final, striking out 17 and pitching all seven innings against Kitchener. Oakville scored once in the first, then added tworun rallies in the second and fifth innings. Novice Pitcher Lauren McLaughlin shut down the top-ranked team in Ontario, Brantford, in the final, backed by some steady defensive play from her teammates. Infielders Alex Saunders, Sam Patoff, Kelly Hannivan and Nicole Helmer made a number of difficult plays, with catchers Kirsty Grant and Renee Helmer nabbing several runners at second base. Oakville defeated the Windsor Expos 3-2 in the quarter-finals, then edged Brampton 3-2 in the semis.
