www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 2, 2006 - 9 UW has new chief United Way of Oakville (UWO) has appointed Barbara Burton as chief executive officer effective Oct. 2. Burton is currently executive director of The Osborne Group in Toronto, a team of senior executives that provides companies and non-profit organizations with interim management support. She was selected after a comprehensive search initiated in March. "We are thrilled Barbara has accepted the position," said Gordon Ross, chair of UWO's board of directors. "She brings a breadth of knowledge, experience and leadership, which we are confident will benefit both United Way and the Oakville community." Burton also has extensive volunteer experience in the non-profit sector, including 12 years as a member of the Milton District Hospital board of directors, and the amalgamated Halton Healthcare Service's (HHS) board, where she served as chair from 2001-2003. Burton was a long-standing volunteer with the Children's Aid Society of Metropolitan Toronto, providing support to the organization for 27 years, and served as an HHS board representative for the Milton District Hospital Foundation. "I am very much looking forward to joining United Way of Oakville, and continuing to address the needs of a growing and diverse community," said Burton. Currently a resident of Campbellville, Burton will be relocating to Oakville. Burton replaces Alison Pickard, who was CEO of United Way of Oakville for six years, prior to stepping down from the role in February. Chandra Hardeen, vice president, community impact has served as interim CEO since that time. "We are truly grateful to Chandra for assuming this role back in February," said Ross. "Her leadership and commitment to United Way and the Oakville community has been exemplary, and we look forward to working with her to make a positive impact in our community as she resumes her previous role." A selection committee made up of the board chair and three board members interviewed three executive search firms. The decision to hire Burton was ratified by United Way of Oakville board members at special board meeting held Jul. 25. From ADAPT, to the Halton Multicultural Council, to VON Halton, United Way of Oakville provides support to 31 health and social service agencies providing programs and services that address children and youth, community advocacy and planning, those in crisis, services for the elderly and health and rehabilitation. It also provides funding for other projects and initiatives designed to help build the community's social service capacity.
