www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 4, 2006 - 11 Chill out on the civic holiday weekend According to the long-term forecast provided by Oakville-based The Weather Network, temperatures are expected to steadily increase over the holiday weekend to a high of 31C on Monday. With that in mind, everyone is encouraged to: · Drink lots of water (avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages) · Check regularly on children, neighbours, the elderly and those with disabilities and chronic illnesses · Stay in an air-conditioned place (if possible) and only go outdoors during the coolest part of the day · Limit outdoor exercise · Avoid the sun by wearing loose-fitting clothing, hat and sunglasses and apply sunscreen (of at least SPF 15) 20 to 30 minutes before going outside. · Never leave children or pets unattended in a car · Control your pet's exposure to sun limit time and provide water and shade · Consult your doctor or pharmacist about side effects of medications According to the Halton Region Health Department, those especially at risk during heat and smog-related weather conditions include: - Older adults (over the age of 65) - Infants and young children - Those with chronic heart or lung disease, including asthma - People taking certain medications (consult your doctor or pharmacist) others supervising children should be aware of the health risks during a heat or smog alert. Even short periods of high temperatures can cause serious health problems. If you have the following symptoms of heat-induced illness, seek medical attention right away: - Rapid breathing - Weakness or fainting - Headache and/or confusion - Nausea, dizziness, blurred vision - Convulsions, high body temperature The Town of Oakville is also doing its part to help. "Residents are urged to take advantage of Oakville's air-conditioned community centres, seniors centres, library branches and Town Hall, or take a dip at one of our five indoor pools, five outdoor pools or 11 splash pads," said Nina deVaal, Director of Recreation and Culture. "We have also extended specific pool hours for added convenience. Our splash pads hours have been extended until 9 p.m." Parents with children attending Town-run summer day camp programs are reminded to pack extra drinks and to freeze drinks the night before if possible. It is also a good idea to pack a change of clothes and towel daily, as the campers will get wet most days. "Given the recent heat wave, program plans will be modified slightly to reflect more passive games that require less physical exertion," explained deVaal. "Staff will ensure games are played in as cool a space as possible, either inside the gym or in the shade. All of the schools have been provided with fans to help encourage airflow within the gym."
