www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 4, 2006 - 19 New in town Swimmers achieve personal bests Continued from page 17 KEVIN HILL / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER GRAND OPENING: At the recent grand opening of the Oakville Laser Clinic and Spa, are from left, Aaron Eckler, Botox representative; Lisa Downing, laser hair removal technician; Santina Novello, registered nurse; Kris Mills, owner, Lorraine Bryan, registered nurse, Ward 2 Councillor Fred Oliver; Jennifer Milligan, administration; Rebecca Mills, director; Dana Clarck, owner; Julie Bath, esthetician, (in front) Joanne Butchrad, administrative manager and Lynda Jamieson, administration. The new clinic is located at 2427 Trafalgar Rd., Unit A5, in the plaza just south of Dundas Street. Bang's son Eric, 16, a "strong runner," was done in five hours, 58 minutes. "Eric had a great swim this year accompanied by his uncle Jamie Myles from Michigan," wrote Bang. "Jamie is a very strong paddler and was able to keep beside Eric through the worst of the winds helping him stay on course." Friend and first time participant, Tiffany Gillespie, 18, completed more than eight kilometres. "At 7 p.m. on Friday, Tiffany had a canoe but no paddlers to accompany her on her first swim," said Bang. "Three remarkable young women, Courtney Scott, 15, Bailey Scott, 13, and her friends Aleta Wilson, also 13, volunteered to get up at 4:30 a.m. to paddle beside Tiffany having no idea what the day would hold for them. Tiffany started at 6 a.m., just after Mark and swam strongly into her unknown journey she had not even seen the course when committing to the swim in June, motivated by the cause and women she knows, one a survivor the other in active battle with breast cancer." Six kilometers into her swim, Gillespie was encouraged to seek shelter from the rain, "and a very kind cottage family offered them a chance to warm up in their hot tub which the girls happily accepted and received a donation once they explained what they were doing and why." Gillespie swam another two kilometers "before giving up to exhaustion, a courageous first swim accompanied by three tenuous but drenched young women." Another friend, Kevin Lord, 17, also of Oakville, swam five and a half kilometres, pleased to have surpassed last year's four kilometres. His parents Len and Corinne Lord accompanied him. Bang attributed the success of Swim for the Cure to not only the participants but also the crew. "The crew was drenched to the skin, some shivering as they paddled beside us, seeking shelter for us close to shore during the worst of the weather or being a bright presence to oncoming boaters," wrote Bang, adding the crew were the "unsung heroes." The crew included Bang's parents, siblings, other relatives plus friends and cottagers along the Severn River.
