The StC a t h e r i n e 's based holistic nutritionist will be at the Real Lisa Petty Canadian Superstore in Oakville to address how personal appearance and health problems are often symptoms of what we're eating. "It's you are what you eat, and the second part of it is that a lot of the things that we think of as beauty concerns, like acne and dark under-eye circles, are actually symptoms of deeper problems within the body," said Petty. For example, acne could mean your digestive tract isn't working properly. Dark under eye circles could be a result of a congested liver, she says. "Instead of putting on make-up to try and cover these things up, we should be eating better." Petty, an international speaker who's been invited to share her message on television and contributes to several publications, advocates healthy eating as a means of prevention. "When we can give our body what it needs to work properly, it doesn't have to spend as much time fighting disease," she said. The seminar Friday from 7-9 p.m. will focus on what foods we should be eating, and how they should be prepared. "It's about the importance and the benefits of our food choices, and essentially it's the benefits of eating more raw, uncooked food," she said, adding we only get enzymes in raw foods, which help to "clean and detoxify." It's a message Petty says "anyone who's alive" should be interested in. "Anyone who's interested in learning how to improve the way they look and feel without having to worry about taking medication, without having to worry about applying makeup to cover dark circles...anyone who's sort of feeling older than their years." Often symptoms we think are due to aging, Petty adds, are not. "They're actually just symptoms of a body that's toxic." That's something she discusses in depth in her most recent book, Living Foods for Living Well, which explores how many cultures around the world live disease-free, active lives into their late 80s, and what they do differently than North Americans. Petty's seminar, Living Foods for Living Well, is Friday, Aug. 11 at the Great Canadian Superstore, 201 Oak Park Blvd., in the Community Room from 7-9 p.m. The evening will include a question and answer session and everyone will receive a free copy of her latest book. To attend, participants must pre-register by calling 1877-RAW-VEGS or by e-mailing register@rawgreens.com For more on Lisa Petty, visit www.livingbeauty.ca.
