During the Summer Reading Program, the library has been celebrating heroes of all kinds; those of might and magic, of fact and fiction, sports heroes, super heroes, and four-legged heroes, too. This annual program is invaluable to parents and children, as it helps keep kids reading throughout the summer. They're able to read what, when and how much they want to. Many exciting things have happened during the Summer Reading Program. On July 24, the White Oaks branch experienced the full benefit of Halton Emergency Services. A fire truck, an ambulance and the Halton Regional Police Service Community Liaison van were parked in the parking lot while children of all ages got up close and personal with the vehicles and staff. The fire truck had to leave temporarily on an emergency, but returned to finish the program. On July 18, the Central branch held a Four-Legged Heroes drop-in program. Children were able to make crafts, build a horse puzzle and even play miniature golf in the `Tiger Woods' Putting Zone. In between arts and crafts, kids were invited to watch presentations by Illustrator Martha Newbigging and meet Gizmo, a CNIB Foster Puppy. The kids enjoyed hopping around to each of the stations, making and creating new things. Other Quest for Heroes-inspired programs have included a visit from the Owls of Mountsberg, Sciensational Snakes, a musical concert with Turkey Rhubarb, and Applefun Puppetry's production of Robin Hood and the Dragon. The summer reading program is almost finished. As of July 30, approximately 3,918 children were regis- tered in the program, with just one week to go. Next week will be very busy with children all over Oakville completing their reading goals. Once finished, they'll be invited to the End of Summer Reading party with magician, Scott Dietrich, who will perform one show at each of our five library branches, during the week of Aug. 21. This year the Rotary Club of Upper Oakville Centennial is organizing the annual charity "best ball" golf tournament on behalf of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, Aug.16 at Wyldewood Golf and Country Club on Trafalgar Road. Over the past year, OTMH faced the challenges of over 46,000 emergency cases, 2200 births and 21,000 surgeries. The majority of the equipment needs of the hospital do not come from government funding, but from events such as the golf tournament. This year the funds raised will be directed towards the purchase of essential new equipment for the emergency department Tournament chair, Mary Jane Howie, immediate past-president of the Rotary Club of Upper Oakville Centennial advises that there are still a few spaces available for golfers.
