14 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 11, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville university student has the Wright stuff Oakville university student Stephanie Wong is one of 10 students selected from more than 170 applicants across Canada to receive the Peter Wright Award, based on her academic excellence, community service and extra-curricular activities. Wong will receive $7,500 toward her graduate studies this fall, the Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation recently announced. Each year the Foundation grants graduate awards to 10 students across the country who have benefited from a Canadian Scholarship Trust Plan RESP (Registered Education Savings Plan) for their undergraduate education and who want to pursue graduate studies. Since its inception more than 20 years ago, the program has granted more than $925,000 in graduate awards to Canadian students. Wong graduated from McMaster University with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Kinesiology and is presently attending the University of Western Ontario for the four-year Medicine program. During her undergraduate studies, Stephanie was an anatomy lab tutor to first year medical students and achieved the Provost's Honour List for two consecutive years. Wong has also volunteered both locally and globally, most notably in Recife, Brazil where she was able to work and interact with children whose lives had been adversely affected by abuse, neglect and poverty. The Foundation aims to improve access to graduate studies and recognize outstanding achievement through the award program. The labour market values university graduates and rewards their knowledge and skills and, according to the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, university graduates earn $1 million more on average over their lifetime than do those without a post-secondary education. Employment for those with one or more university degrees has risen by 45 per cent in the past 10 years. "Year after year, Canadian Scholarship Trust Plan beneficiaries impress us with their ability to excel in their studies while making significant contributions to their communities," said Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation President John Kearns. "We are pleased to recognize Stephanie's achievements by contributing to her graduate studies, which cost more each year." The Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation, established in 1960, is the oldest and largest provider of Group RESPs in Canada. Its mission is to promote the benefits of higher education and improve access by reducing financial barriers and providing wide distribution of RESPs. The committee, with representatives from both school boards and all bus operators in Halton, is hosting its annual School Bus Orientation Day on Saturday, August 26, starting at 9 a.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the free sessions, which will feature a classroom presentation on school bus safety, including a special Winnie-the-Pooh video and a demonstration on a school bus. School bus company safety officers and bus drivers will talk to children about safely getting on and off of the bus, proper behaviour on a school bus, crossing the street to get to a waiting bus and overall school bus safety. In addition, a tip sheet on school bus safety entitled Think! Think! Think Safety! will be distributed. The committee hopes that the orientation sessions will help students and their parents feel more comfortable with the idea of riding a school bus. The sessions begin at 9 a.m. on Aug. 26 at the following six locations throughout Halton. To register students for a preferred time slot, parents should call the host bus company at the phone number listed next to the desired location. · Oakville: Loyola Catholic Secondary School, 905-829-2040 (Stock Transportation). · Burlington North: Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, 905-335-7010 (Laidlaw Transit Ltd.). · Burlington South: Nelson High School, 905-333-4047 (Attridge Transportation). · Acton: Acton District High School, 519-853-1550 (Tyler Transport Ltd.). · Georgetown: Georgetown District High School, 905-8772251 (Laidlaw Transit Ltd.). · Milton: Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School, 905-8772251 (Laidlaw Transit Ltd.).
