After graduating from the University of Western Ontario with the highest grades in his class, Visschedyk enrolled at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and passed his bar exam last year. After lining up employment he starts articling in September at Stieber Berlach law firm in Toronto he decided to take a year off to train and cycle across Canada. He is riding a 30-gear lightweight 16-lb. Devinci road bike, a donation from the Montrealbased bicycle manufacturer. The bike is standing up well to the rigours of being pedaled an average of 132 kilometres a day at 25 kilometres per hour. "I've had only two days of rain," said Visschedyk. "The temperatures have been hot, but it hasn't been as hot as here (in southern Ontario). It's not as humid." The cyclist is on the road from 6 a.m., to early afternoon. "The Rocky Mountains were as tough as I expected," he said. "The hills were not only really high, but also really long." Accompanying him in a Fraserway 25-ft. recreational vehicle is driver, chef and photographer Timothy Knowles, a 59-year-old skin cancer survivor from Toronto. Knowles, who owns The City Kitchen, a gourmet travel adventure company, enjoys the challenge of meeting Visschedyk's vegetarian nutritional needs. Despite his slim physique, the cyclist has a huge appetite. "He needs a lot of calories to fuel his body. Most of us eat about 2,000 calories a day, but David needs at least 7,000 just to maintain his weight." He's down two pounds since he started the ride.
