www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 16, 2006 - 15 Cell that causes neuroblastoma to relapse discovered Continued from page 13 "When you're a vegetarian you can run into a protein problem, so he eats a lot of soy and tofu. He consumes a massive amount of calories," said Knowles. Visschedyk eats "a lot of pasta and carbohydrates...I eat as much as I can." Knowles had a skin cancer growth removed from the top of his head five years ago, "and doctors have since been looking for the source. I go in for the checkup every three months to try find where this cancer originated. After five years, they've found nothing." Knowles, who is also a web designer, learned about Visschedyk's project from publi- cist Susan McLennan, of Babble On Communications, a volunteer for The James Fund and a friend of the Birrell family. She first got involved with the Birrell family through the Make A Wish Foundation James wanted to be on the set of a taping of a children's television show. "Originally my nephew was to come to the set, but he was killed in a car crash when he was eight years old, so fulfilling James' wish was for me a nice opportunity to fulfill Eric's wish at the same time," said McLennan. "When James died, his family was anxious to help other kids with neuroblastoma," she said. "I was thrilled to learn Visschedyk wanted to cycle across Canada for The James Fund. "Neuroblastoma is the deadliest form of childhood cancer there is. We've made great strides in saving limbs and lives, but we haven't had the same success with neuroblastoma," said McLennan. The James Fund was initially set up "so we could hire our own researchers and save James' life," said his aunt, Diana Birrell, the fund's development coordinator. "James was diagnosed at age three and he was given all of the treatment Sick Kids had available and he relapsed," she said. The James Fund is Canada's leading neuroblastoma research initiative having raised more than $1 million. Birrell said The James Fund has made some "big headway" such as "isolating the cell that causes neuroblastoma to relapse discovered right here at Sick Kids." Neuroblastoma is a childhood cancer that begins in the embryonic cells that develop into part of the central nervous system. It usually occurs in children under five and is the most common tumour found in babies under a year old. In 70 per cent of cases, the original tumour has already spread into different parts of the body before the disease is diagnosed.
