It is also a time of year when drivers should re-familiarize themselves with safety tips. There is a greater need for attention to the busier surroundings as parents drop off and pick up their children at school. We all share the road with school buses and there is a higher volume of children walking on the road. It is vital all drivers become more cautious on the road in order to keep our kids safe. Reduce speed - Slow down in school zones and be aware of child pedestrians. Wait for kids to complete their crossing safely. Use the Ground Viewing technique Scan under parked cars for the feet of children approaching traffic. Children are shorter therefore they may be completely hidden by a vehicle. Lane change early Change lanes early to make room for kids on bicycles, skateboards or roller blades. In the car: Child seats - Children under the age of 13 are safest in the back seat away from passenger air bags. Have the correct type of seat which corresponds to your child,s weight and size. A booster seat should be used for a child weighing between 18kg and 36kg (40-80lb) and less than145cm tall (4,9 per cent). The child may be ready to use a seat belt alone once they exceed either one of the above criteria. Avoid driver distractions Avoid distractions such as using cell phones, eating or drinking, and personal grooming which impact on how effectively you drive. Give items such as books or toys to children to occupy their attention so that your focus is on the road. Now that drivers are equipped with valuable driver safety tips, the key is to put them to use each day in order to ensure child safety. For more road safety tips, visit www.youngdrivers.com.
