U15 Phantoms tops in Ontario The Oakville Phantoms are the best under-15 girls' soccer team in Ontario, both indoor and outdoor. The Phantoms won all four of their games at last weekend's Ontario Summer Games in Ottawa, earning the Ontario Cup outdoor title. Oakville, which won the provincial indoor crown earlier this year, clinched the outdoor championship with a 2-1 victory over the London Supernova -- the very team that denied the Phantoms in last year's Ontario Cup final. Emily Maganja provided the game-winning goal in the second half, converting a free kick from outside the box. Kristian Visconti had Oakville's other marker, heading in a corner kick by Kelsey Young, to open the scoring before London tied the contest late in the first half. The Phantoms also defeated Bolton 4-0, Ottawa 6-0 and Wexford 1-0 at the Ontario Summer Games competition. "The girls continued to get stronger as the tournament progressed," said Oakville coach Peter Uremovich. "They battled through a tough Wexford opponent and found a way to win and advance to the final, setting up our rematch with London." Uremovich said the team was motivated by last year's loss to the Supernova, noting his players emphasized perseverance and commitment to each other this season. Taryn McKenna earned shutouts in Oakville's first three games, while Tara Dawdy scored the winner against Wexford and finished the tournament with four goals. Also notching markers for the Phantoms were Karine Lanctot (two), Cara Cutaia, Visconti, Angelika Uremovich, Samantha Bright and If the Peterborough Petes had any reservations about Trevor Cann's ability to be a number one goaltender, those doubts should be lessened after last week's Junior World Cup. Cann had a stellar performance at the under-18 international hockey showcase, held in Slovakia, backstopping the Canadian team to its third consecutive gold-medal win at the event. The 17year-old capped his fine tournament showing with a 3-0 shutout of the United States in Saturday's championship game, stopping all 20 shots fired his way. "It's great," Cann said of the opportunity to be the main man between the pipes. "I wasn't used to it with the Petes Trevor Cann (as a rookie last season, backing up David Shantz), so getting the chance to do that is unreal." Cann wasn't simply handed the starting job at the Junior World Cup, however. Canadian head coach Cory Clouston opted to use Lethbridge Hurricanes netminder Justin Leclerc in Canada's opening game, a 5-3 victory over Switzerland, before turning to Cann for the next contest. Cann simply made it difficult for Clouston to justify another goaltending switch, earning player-of-the-game honours with a 4-1 win over Sweden, then downing Slovakia 4-1 before posting the shutout in the gold-medal match. "I guess he was just going by the first two games and whoever played well," Cann said. "We both knew we could battle for the starting position.
