18 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 18, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com YMCA of Lebanon providing medical relief for war victims The YMCA of Lebanon has been working to alleviate the mounting crisis that has been compounded by the displacement of thousands of people during this time of conflict in the Middle East. The YMCA has put into place several key steps to tackle the growing need for medical and basic supplies in the country. The YMCA initiated a move to distribute medicine to the 171 licensed and registered medical dispensaries and clinics operated by local NGOs in coordination with the Lebanese government (Ministry of Public Health) to help 25,000 chronically ill patients. Individuals from the YMCA of Lebanon met with the Minister and the General Director of the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) to work out a coordinated action plan between the YMCA and the MoPH which includes the following: · All 456 countrywide dispensaries participating in the YMCA initiated Medical Assistance Program (MAP) will cover the needs of every patient including those directly affected by the war and the newly displaced people that have taken refuge within their zone. · Each of the 456 dispensaries will collect data on the number of displaced people within their respective areas, including all medical and non-medical needs. All makeshift housing facilities such as schools, churches, and mosques have been informed of the services of the dispensaries in their respective areas. Extra supplies of medicine were delivered to all of these dispensaries. In addition, seven government hospitals in the areas of Beirut, Marjeyoun, Nabatiye, Sidon, Tripoli, Tyre and Zahle will be used as central hubs for the distribution of medicine to those who may not be covered under the MAP network of dispensaries. All general and medical needs, especially those of the chronically ill, will continue to be met through ongoing communication and outreach programs set up through the MoPH.
