AIDS BENEFIT: Artist Chaka Chikodzi looks through one of the many sculptures at the Shona Sculpture Exhibition opening tonight at the Maple Grove United Church. Proceeds from the exhibit will help families in Zimbabwe and South Africa affected by AIDS. A Zimbabwean sculptor and Oakville's Maple Grove United Church are teaming up to help a handful of families devastated by AIDS. South Africa and Zimbabwe are experiencing two of the world's worst AIDS and HIV epidemics, and it's families in those countries that proceeds from the Shona Sculpture Exhibition, which opens tonight at the "You know what, church, will we're all together be assisting. in this struggle." "If you look from the Chaka Chikodzi, south to the Shona Sculpture north, AIDS is curator one of the things that we have in common in Africa," said Zimbabwe native, Chaka Chikodzi, the exhibition's curator and main artist. It's also a struggle Chikodzi, who fled to Canada as a political refugee in 2001, knows all too well. "Probably one in every three people in Zimbabwe has AIDS, and even if you don't have it, you're definitely affected by it," said the 30-year-old, whose parents have been HIV positive since 1998. "A lot of people are in denial, there's not a lot of people wanting to get tested ­ it's that bad. Nowadays, everyone is affected by AIDS."
