www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 18, 2006 - 3 Graeme Kerr serves up a treat for Kerr Village Former Galloping Gourmet is singing a healthier tune By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF "Everything has gotten bigger over the years and guess what? We've gotten bigger with it." Former Galloping Gourmet Graeme Kerr A pair of famous Kerrs became honourary Kerr Street Villagers Tuesday. Former Galloping Gourmet cook Graeme Kerr of the popular 1960s and 70s TV series and his wife Treena made a stop in Kerr Village to tell the community about their latest endeavour. "Treena and I are going around the nations Canada and the United States making a contribution to people's health," Graeme, who was sporting red and blue suspenders and a multicoloured tie, told the more than 100 fans in attendance. While The Galloping Gourmet was known for drinking lots of wine and using butter, cream and fat in his recipes, Graeme, 72, is now singing a different tune. "Everything has gotten bigger over the years and guess what? We've gotten bigger with it," he said. "If we can find ways of living our lives that make us less likely to have a chronic disease then why not do it?" One of the things he and Treena are advocating is eating nine servings of vegetables and walking 9,000 steps every day, as well as getting nine hours of sleep each night. The North American tour and change in attitude was spurred by a heart attack and stroke Treena suffered in 1986. "I ate what I liked," she told Kerr villagers, adding doctors told her she was a "walking time bomb." on behalf of Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn recognizing the pair as "honourary Kerr villagers." Another message the Kerrs will be plugging on their cross-Canada tour is what Graeme calls his "outdulgence" idea. He and Treena have each been "saving" two cookies per day. At a cost of about $0.17 per cookie, that works out to $268 saved every year. That money has been going in an "outdulgence account" to help underprivileged children in Ethiopia and Brazil, Graeme explained. While he admits it's a "wildly unlikely scenario in our culture" to eat fewer treats and save the money for others, he and Treena have saved $40,000 Canadian out of their food budget over the years to the benefit of others. "It's your life as well as their life," said Graeme, who signed autographs and offered fans his low-fat `Kerr Cookies' after his appearance. "You benefit, and so do they." Graeme and Treena Kerr will be at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto Aug. 18, 19 and 20. "If I hadn't have become willing, I would have been dead today." After changes in eating and behaviour and triple by-pass surgery three months ago, Treena's heart is now "very healthy," said Graeme. The pair's new DVD collection, Lifestyle #9, explores what people can do to improve their health and includes tips and appearances from other expert health guests. "It's for you to learn how to care for yourself, how to cook for yourself," said Treena, who has produced nearly 2,000 of her husband's shows over the years. The DVDs were on sale Tuesday and a portion of proceeds went to Kerr Street Ministries. Greeting the Kerr pair, who recently celebrated their 50th anniversary, was president of the Kerr Village BIA, Richard Messer, Ward 2 councilor Fred Oliver representing Mayor Ann Mulvale, and Kerr Village resident Kathryn Kates, a writer for the Toronto Star and Hamilton Spectator, who organized the event. Messer presented Graeme and Treena with `The Key to Kerr Street' and a certificate BACK TO MARCH BREAK SPECIAL SAVE $AVE $ SCHOOL SPECIAL 4 Day Programs $ 45 4 Day Condensed Program March 12-15 & March 16-19 Starts August 28 - 31 Certificate for highest insurance discount issued by MTO.
