Couple suffers burns in grease fire Although a husband and wife suffered burns to their hands and faces following a cooking fire Thursday night in a basement apartment, the Oakville Fire Department says it could have ended much worse. According to Chief Fire Prevention Officer Gary Laframboise, the incident occurred in an apartment located in a semi-detached home on Garthdale Court, when a pan in which a woman was cooking with grease burst into flames. After she placed the pan on the floor, her husband threw water on the blaze in an attempt to extinguish it exactly the wrong thing to do, says Laframboise, who explained that simply placing a lid on the pan and leaving it in place will safely do the trick. "They were actually lucky there was no explosion," said Laframboise, alluding to fires in other jurisdictions that have gotten out of control. "This could have been worse." If there is any doubt whether the fire is in fact out, he continued, never hesitate to call the fire department. In most cases, Laframboise added, oil or grease catches fire because it gets too hot too fast. According to consumer product safety information provided by Health Canada, if grease or oil catches fire: · Cover the flames with a large metal lid and turn off the heat. · Do not try to pick up the pan. The flames could spread quickly. · If you get burned, put the burn under cool water right away. · If your clothes catch fire you must stop, drop and roll.
