www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 19, 2006 - 15 Couple celebrates 70 years of marriage Joseph and Gertrude Anderson are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary, but they remember it like it was yesterday. Joseph, 94, a life-long local resident and the third oldest of four and only surviving offspring of the late Mayor William Anderson, had to leave town to get married. It was Aug. 22, 1936. He married Gertrude, the oldest of five born and raised in Scotia Junction, a train stop near Emsdale north of Huntsville. "My parents were farmers and they couldn't leave their livestock," said Gertrude, 92. "The animals had to be fed every day." Born in Wick, Scotland, and an Oakvillian from a very early age, Joseph said, "I remember, even as a kid, that my dad was on council. played a little golf and enjoyed sailing. "I did the type of things guys did," said Joseph, adding he's a Mason and a past master of the Oakville Lodge. "I just stayed home and raised kids," said Gertrude. They have five children, 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. They've lived in the same house for 52 years. "I remember when our street was just a dirt road at the edge of town," said Gertrude. "There was nothing beyond us except farmers' fields. It was still (Trafalgar) Township. We were here not long before it became part of Oakville." The Andersons are members of St. Jude's Anglican Church. The couple will celebrate the milestone at a later date.
