18 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 19, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Walk for Heart on Sept. 24 to raise funds for heart and stroke research Walking is a great way to keep your heart healthy. When you join the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Cheerios Heart and Stroke Walk for Heart on Sunday, Sept. 24, there's an added benefit. You'll be raising money to help find answers to heart disease and stroke. Last year, this flagship fundraising walk raised almost $3 million nationally. This year, once again, hundreds of hospital and university-based researchers and research teams are counting on the walk to raise more than $3.2 million. This walk was previously known as the Cheerios Heart and Stroke Mother Daughter Walk. It's new name reflects the inclusiveness of this important event. The Cheerios Heart and Stroke Walk for Heart is a non-competitive walk for the whole family. What's more, the event marks an important international occasion on Sept. 24 World Heart Day. Canadians in 73 communities across six provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec) will be stepping out to raise funds in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The Halton walk is at Bronte Creek Provincial Park at 10:30 a.m. Participants will follow a scenic 2.5- or five-kilometre route. Check-in time is 9 a.m. and the walk warm-up starts at 10:15 a.m. Participants will receive a goodie bag, and enjoy food and entertainment. Registration for the 2006 Cheerios Heart and Stroke Walk for Heart takes place up until the day of the event. People can also register on-line at www.heartandstroke.ca/walk until Sept. 22, or register by mail, fax or in person. For more information, call the Halton Region Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario office at 905-634-7732. If you register by Friday, Sept. 8, the registration fee is $10. If you register after that date, the fee is $15. If you raise $100 or more in pledges, your registration fee is waived and you receive a Tshirt. Participants who sign up on-line as a team of five or more people by Sept. 8 will receive a banner to decorate and display their team spirit. Each team that raises $1,500 or more will be eligible to win a $150 restaurant gift card one prize awarded per Walk site. The Cheerios Heart and Stroke Walk for Heart is a lot of fun for the entire family, but it's the pledges every generous participant collects that are crucial. The easiest way to do this is by registering on-line at www.heartandstroke.ca/walk. Then send e-mails to friends, family and colleagues you would like to sponsor you. These sponsors can simply pledge on-line and they will automatically receive an e-mailed tax receipt. The Heart and Stroke Foundation, a volunteerbased health charity, leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through the advancement of research and its application, the promotion of healthy living, and advocacy. Free osteoporosis clinic at The Medicine Shoppe Because osteoporosis is a silent disease and early detection is critical for effective treatment, The Medicine Shoppe, 267 Lakeshore Rd. E., in downtown Oakville is offering a free bone-density clinic Aug. 22 - 24. This simple and easy test takes only a few minutes, and will give Oakville residents an early indication of whether they are experiencing bone density loss and should consult their family physician. Osteoporosis is a crippling disease that afflicts 1.4 million Canadians, significantly decreasing their quality of life. Post-menopausal women are prime victims, and so are men over age 50. This age demographic makes up a large segment of Oakville's population. Early detection means they can start appropriate treatments and live normal and active lives. "A simple ultrasound of a person's heel, while not a conclusive and thorough testing, is a good indicator of whether the person is losing bone density and should consult their family physician," says Richard Price, pharmacist-owner. "Offering free clinics such as these is our way of helping to build a healthy community. We don't just sell products, we partner with our customers to improve their health." The clinic is being sponsored in part by Juvent Inc., the manufacturer of Canada's first drug-free therapy for osteoporosis. For information, call The Medicine Shoppe at 905-842-2770.
