22 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 19, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Assistant coaches play large role in Oakville victory Continued from page 21 "Brian Rea had taken a year off, so had Drew Petkoff and Kyle Hagel. Bobby Debrone was ready to quit. Sean Thomson and Josh Smyth were ready to pack it in," said the diminutive defender, whose hustle and determination belies his 5-foot-4 frame. "But when we found out Glen was coming back, we got together and it was all business. (Glen) puts us first and we do the same for him. I've never played for a coach like him." Little, who took over the Buzz three years ago, said the club has done an excellent job in scouting and recruiting players who were passed up by other teams. He also highlighted the efforts of his coaching staff, which includes co-coach Shawn Cardy, defensive coach Craig Hedley and goaltending coach Mark Baldini. "I knew as a coach I had shortcomings, and it was the x's and o's, running a practice properly," Little said. "Shawn Cardy has brought the finishing touch. It's grown to where I've been just a traffic cop the last year and a half. "I do little stuff, the relationships and stuff like that. Shawn's the brains," added the former professional netminder. "(Hedley) calls for perfection on defense and (Baldini) has turned Gary Muzzin into one of the best junior goaltenders in Canada, as far as I'm concerned." The team plans to spend a couple days celebrating its provincial championship, then refocus with practice Monday before heading down to Windsor Tuesday for the Founder's Cup. The nationals begin Wednesday. Ontario, which has traditionally done well at the Founder's tournament, will also be represented by an Iroquois Lacrosse Association team and the host AKO Fratmen. While admitting both those teams, among others, will pose a stiff challenge, Debrone likes the Buzz's chances. "I have no clue what to expect but I think we're the best team in the country," he said. "If we play like we did (Thursday), I don't care if you're from B.C. or Nova Scotia. We're going to beat you." Other members of the OLA champion Buzz are Spencer Robson, Chris Moulson, Nik Matwijszyn, Brenden Thenhaus, Chris Downey, Alex Crepinsek, Jon Hagel, Josh Ruys, Josh Barrick, Reed Board, Bryan Johnson, Jordan Macintosh and Matt Bertrand. Roger Thenhaus is the club's president and general manager. -- Jon Kuiperij can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com.
