Burloak atom boys first at divisionals The Burloak Canoe Club continued its winning ways at this year's Western Ontario Division atoms regatta, held earlier this month at Port Credit. Burloak earned the burgee (pennant) as the top overall club in boys' competition. Contributing to the win were Robbie Andison, Chris Arnold, Liam Davidson, Matthew Holmes, Samuel Smith and Jillian Perrone. Perrone was drafted from Burloak's atom girls' team to round out the boys' squad. The team accumulated points in various kayak and canoe single, two-person and four-person events on the 200-metre course. In the war canoe race, the six youths were joined by five paddlers from Toronto's Balmy Beach club and, coxed by national development team member Jamie Andison, beat their Mississauga Canoe Club rivals. Atom competition featured children aged eight or nine as of January 1, 2006. Meanwhile, Burloak's high-performance paddlers -- including Olympic champion Adam van Koeverden -- are preparing for this year's national championships, scheduled for Aug. 23-26 in Regina.
