www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 23, 2006 - 17 Participation in Terry Fox Run keeps growing Continued from 14 arriving back at the hotel and emptying the bags covering the room with the loot, thinking this may one day help save someone's mother, cousin or friend. "Terry was running towards a stage and 10,000 strong at Nathan Philips Square. I was happy making it 10,001 as I melted in with the crowd to take in the words from the stage, Terry's words in particular. "He touched me once again telling us how flawed he was, that those battling cancer were far more courageous than he and praising those he spoke to for supporting the cause," Fox said. Later, it was off to the CN tower for some family fun. "We turned bumper cars into a competition intent on inflicting the most damage to a family member," said Fox. "The novelty of gathering as a family for the first time in three months had obviously worn off. In the ensuring melee Terry's leg fell off and it was only then that people recognized him." Being on the road with his older brother, was "for my entire family and for me, one of the happiest moments of my life," said Fox. "The days elevated the Marathon of Hope to another level and it stayed there "Now when I am in this area I remember how you embraced my brother." Darrell Fox, national director of the Terry Fox Foundation until Terry was forced to stop his run on Sept. 1. Fox and his wife Bonnie lived in Toronto for 10 years from 1994 to 2004. Both of his children, Alexandra and Connor, were born in Toronto. They currently live in Vancouver. "It is a good, pure and warm feeling that has not faded in 26 years," he said. "Now when I am in this area I remember how you embraced my brother." Last year's 25th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run was "quite an exciting time for us," concluded Fox. That year, 200,000 Canadians participated in runs across the country including students who participated in the first National School Run Day. "By the end of June, we have 8,300 schools registered," said Fox afterwards. "In comparison, we had 4,800 schools in 2004." The second annual National School Run Day is Sept. 29. Last year's run raised $36 million worldwide, and 6,500 limited edition Terry Fox shoes were sold in one week raising $500,000. This year, the Terry Fox Foundation, through the National Cancer Institute of Canada, is funding $20 million in cancer research. "My promise to Terry is that I will not rest until his dream to eradicate cancer is realized. If it doesn't happen during my lifetime, then I'm doing it for my kids. "When Terry was sick he had no idea what cancer was," said Fox. "He went to Simon Fraser University to read about cancer and found that very little was being spent on cancer research." The 26th Oakville Terry Fox Run is Sunday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. at Abbey Park Secondary School, 1455 Glen Abbey Gate.
