Oakville actually defeated the eventual champion, Winnipeg Smitty's, in the semifinal, but met Winnipeg again in the championship game due to the double-elimination medal round format. Smitty's then blanked the Angels 7-0 to claim the gold. In preliminary-robin play, Oakville defeated the Edmonton Calahoo 3-2, Calgary Ice 5-1, Saskatoon Starco 4-3, Manitoba Magic 7-1 and Port Perry 3-2. The Angels also dropped decisions to Edmonton Sherwood Park (10-6), Pickering (4-3) and Regina Extreme (6-2). Oakville faced Pickering in a round-robin tiebreaker and trounced the Heat 12-5. Centerfielder Jodi Waltho sparked the rout, hitting for the cycle, while Tressa Williamson and Jessica Scholey added home runs. Scholey belted a grand slam in the Angels' next game, a 7-0 win over Edmonton Sherwood Park, to advance Oakville to the semifinal. Nicole Ronald drove in the winning run in the semifinal versus Winnipeg, drawing a basesloaded walk on a full-count pitch. Laura Gallant and Waltho were named tournament all-stars, while Nicole MacDonald, Karen Van De Walle, Meghan Chenoweth, Karen Hodgson and Ashleigh Kelly provided steady defensive play throughout the competition. Amanda Black and Ronald pitched for the team, which was sponsored by Mobile Cartage of Burlington and featured university students aged 1923. Up-and-down midget A Hawks finish fifth at lacrosse provincials The roller coaster ride also known as the Oakville midget A Hawks' season came to an end recently with a fifth-place finish at the Ontario Summer Games. The Hawks went 1-2 in their first day of box lacrosse competition at the provincial championships, then rebounded to go 2-1 the following day. Their only loss in the second day was a 7-5 heartbreaker to eventual gold-medalist Six Nations. Oakville began the season with a firstplace seeding but fourth-place finish in the provincial field lacrosse championships. The Hawks, filled with first-year midget players, went on to win a tournament and finish second in two others, serving notice they were a team to watch at provincials. However, Oakville nearly didn't make it to the Ontario Summer Games, needing a 4-1 record in the second qualifying round to advance. Hawks captain Josh Ruys was named to the provincial all-star team following the Ontario Summer Games, the final highlight of his days as a minor lacrosse player. Other players on the team, coached by Ken Gillies and Stu Brown, were Jamie Elliott, Alex Kruse, Cam Watts, Reid Stevens, Dylan Gilbert, Brad Gillies, Ryan Walik, Christian Johansson, Sam White, Nick Soubry, Jim Whelpdale, Josh Barrick, Elliot Cowburn, Eric Crepinsek, Mark Runciman and Jake Jagodkin. John Elliott was the team's trainer.
