www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 25, 2006 - 5 St. Dominic teacher nominated for Governor General's teaching award For encouraging students to "do" history instead of reading about it, St. Dominic Catholic Elementary School teacher John MacPhail has been selected by Canada's National History Society for the 2006 Governor General's Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History. A panel of distinguished judges will next select six recipients out of 25, based on a submission outlining the nominee's achievements and innovations in the field of teaching Canadian History or Social Studies. Those six recipients will be selected and awarded $2,500, a gold medal and a trip for two to the Awards ceremony in Ottawa on Thursday, September 28. If selected, the Awards finalists will also be treated to the official presentation at the Governor General's Residence, a private luncheon with Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean and a private tour of the historic Rideau Hall. Their respective schools will also benefit from a cash gift of $1,000. During the Awards festivities, recipients and guests will also be treated to a gala dinner and a rare insiders' tour of the Gatineau Preservation Centre hosted by program partner, Library and Archives Canada. "These awards acknowledge how childhood educators provide children with the critical experiences and learning that will affect them for the rest of their lives," said Ian Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. "We are proud to continue our strong partnership with the History Society and to honour the talent, skill and dedication of these teachers who play such a vital role in our society." MacPhail firmly believes in the idea of "constructive controversy." In his project, a mock trial of William Lyon Mackenzie, he develops his students' skills in critical thought, debate, and questioning assumptions. Within the larger theme of conflict and change, MacPhail successfully bridges the gap between the Rebellions of 1837 and modern issues such as media bias, power structures, and the justice system. His lesson plans are comprehensive and the scaffolding he provides ensures student success. Mackenzie was never tried for treason during his lifetime, but the renowned Canadian rebel recently faced the music in court at St. Dominic School. The occasion was a mock trial performed by students in MacPhail's Grade 7 and 8 history class in an effort to have them better understand Mackenzie as well as his turbulent life and times. Canada's National History Society established the Governor General's Awards in 1996 with the following aims: · To recognize excellence in the teaching of Canadian history regardless of the curricula in which it is taught. · To inspire teachers and schools to strive for excellence in Canadian history education. · To promote and facilitate the sharing of best practices and innovative teaching ideas within Canada's teaching community. The Governor General's Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History is sponsored by Canada's National History Society, which is a charitable organization dedicated to popularizing Canadian History. This is the eleventh year for the Governor General's Awards. · replacement parts · computer cables · ink & toner cartridges · new & refurbished computers · computer upgrades & service embur $ COMPUTERS, SALES & SERVICE .ca FREE COGECO HIGH-SPEED INTERNET STARTER KIT (with the purchase of any computer system) In-Store and On-Site Service · From installations and upgrades to adware, spyware, virus and trojan removal we can do it all · Software & hardware troubleshooting, wired & wireless home & small business networking · Over 15 years experience maintaining and repairing personal computers in the Oakville area · Honest advice - if we can't fix your problem, we'll tell you and you don't pay · Reasonable rates, quick response time and rapid turn around times on repairs are what we're all about · Next time you feel like tossing your computer out the window, give us a call or drop it off DANCE MUSIC MUSICAL THEATRE DRAMA FINE ARTS PRE-K - SK CAMPS BIRTHDAY PARTIES Offering Oakville the finest in arts exploration and development. embur ECONOBOX4 NEW SYSTEMS!
