www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 30, 2006 - 9 Police want kids to get a Safe Start back to school Halton police will be cracking down on drivers to remind everyone to drive safely as students head back to school. Called Safe Start, the crackdown began Monday and runs until Friday, Sept. 15. The project is described as a "high enforcement, educational traffic initiative." "Safe Start has been undertaken to remind our driving public of the need to be courteous to other drivers and our children particularly at this time when they make their way back to school," said police spokesperson Sgt. Peter Payne. The project will be in effect across Halton and will be carried out by the Regional Traffic Enforcement Unit and District Traffic officers -- staff deployment that should maximize the effect of the project by ensuring that every available officer is focusing on this initiative. Officers will be focusing on the five "Ss" -- speeding, seatbelts, stop signs, school zones and school buses. Officers will be focusing their attention on these areas to ensure that the driving public pays attention to the rules of the road, now and throughout the year. The project will be maintained with a less public profile year round. "Initial efforts are dubbed `Safe Start' as the project is being kicked off as our children return to school. Future initiatives `Safe Arrival' and `Safe Return' will ensure that focus is maintained throughout the year," said Payne. The initiative is designed to keep drivers obeying the rules of the road to keep the roads safe for both vehicles and pedestrians.
