With a municipal election approaching in November and a provincial election set for 2007, longtime Oakville councillor turned Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn raised eyebrows late yesterday by announcing he is holding a press conference this afternoon regarding his own future. "Member of Provincial Parliament for Oakville, Kevin Flynn, will be holding an important press conference to make an announcement regarding his future as MPP Oakville MPP for Oakville," Kevin Flynn stated the release circulated late yesterday afternoon. All local -- and provincial -- media were invited. Flynn is to be making his announcement at the Oakville Public Library, Central Branch Auditorium today at 2 p.m. Flynn was elected an MPP for Oakville in 2003 after serving southwest Oakville in Ward 1 about 18 years. As a local councillor, Flynn represented Ward 1 as its Town and Regional councillor, first elected in 1985, and then returned six, consecutive times. Since being elected MPP, Flynn, an environmental advocate, has been the Ministry of Labour Parliamentary Assistant, chaired an Ontario government ergonomics panel to reduce repetitive strain injuries in the workplace, and led consultation about mandatory retirement. Allan Elgar, who has been the Town and Regional councillor for Ward 4 for six years is hoping to retain his seat representing Glen Abbey. Meanwhile Ward 5 Town Councillor Tom Adams, who's finishing up his first term on council, is hoping to step into the Town/Regional council position for northeast Oakville. That seat is being vacated as Ward 5 Town/Regional Councillor Janice Wright announced she wants the mayor's job. Wright, who was first a Town councillor, then a Town/Regional councillor for Ward 5, announced in late August she would go up against veteran Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale and second-time mayoral challenger Rob Burton for the mayor's job.
