22 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 8, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Which is the best exercise method for burning calories? T he following is an excerpt from the YMCA of Oakville website article Y Adult Health News. This article can be found at www.ymcaofoakville.com, under Programs/Y Adults and is published bi-monthly and written by the fitness experts at the Y. Question: Which is better for aiding in fat loss aerobic training or weight training? Answer: Aerobic training and weight training are both important for the goal of fat loss. In fact, weight training may actually be more important than cardio to lose fat for a few main reasons. When someone is performing cardio for an extended time, he or she is burning a significant amount of calories during the workout. However, once the cardio is stopped, the calorie burning soon slows down and returns to a resting state, usually within 30 minutes. During weight training, people are burning an increased amount of calories, but more importantly, they continue burning more calories for up to two hours after their workouts, according to studies conducted. This is commonly referred to as "the afterburn" and occurs because the body is breaking down muscle during weight lifting. The body then needs to repair these broken down muscles and build itself stronger. These processes require the body to burn a lot of calories, so even when you are sitting down and watching television after a workout, you will be burning more calories. Question: What is the best time of day to exercise? Answer: There are two key factors to consider when trying to determine the best time of day to workout: the research and yourself. Research does support better performance in the afternoon. However, for most people, the focus needs to be on when they can train as opposed to simply the best time to train. So, even if research suggests that aerobic based training may produce slightly better results in the afternoon, you may not have the availability to train at that time. Likewise, many may find the workday too exhausting and have little energy to train in the evenings. So unless you are looking for optimal results for a specific sport or event, use your own feeling, mood and energy level as the guide to the "when" for working out, rather than research evidence that shows afternoon/early evening is the best time. Open to the public September 13 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and September 14 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 658 Catherine Street, Hamilton. Halton's newest women's networking group, Xposay, has gone to bat for a fouryear-old Down Syndrome boy with leukemia. Xposay, which meets every two months at various locations in Oakville and Burlington, has established a charity, Let's Help Evan. Evan was diagnosed in May 2005. Without treatment Evan would have six months to live. Chemotherapy began immediately and with it, a nightmare for Evan's mother Julie. With the treatments destroying his immune system, Evan almost lost his life to an infection last year. Managing Evan's care has been a full-time endeavor for Julie who is a single mom who has been unable to work consistently since Evan became ill. Xposy's next meeting will be on Sept. 19 at the 2020 Lakeside Restaurant and Bar in the Travelodge on Lakeshore Road near Brant Street, Burlington, at 7 p.m. Special guest is caricaturist Sam Gorrie and live entertainment will be provided by Lori Chase and the No Frills Jazz Band. Admission is $5. Proceeds for the September Xposay meeting will go towards the charity Let's Help Evan. Julie's friends and family have planned a fundraising event on Nov. 24 at 7pm at the Polish Hall at 2316 Fairview St., Burlington. The goal is to raise enough money to cover Julie's mortgage payments and living expenses for the remainder of Evan's treatments. Register for this month's Xposay event by contacting Janice@Xposay.org or see http://www.Xposay.org.
