Vince finished third as a four-way jump-off was needed to determine the winner. Local standout show jumper Ainsley Vince and her trusty longtime mount were on top of their game at Halton Place Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately for the tandem, that wasn't quite enough to finish on top of the 20-entry field in the nearby facility's inaugural $75,000 FEI World Cup qualifier. Thriving in a rather soggy grand prix ring to close out the two-week Canadian Country Classic, Vince and Catch 22 advanced to a four-way jump-off before being eclipsed by Orangeville's Frankie Chesler-Ortiz and mouthful Picolienzeldenrust. Chesler-Ortiz and Campbellville's Michael Grinyer each delivered another clean round, with Chesler-Ortiz upstaging Grinyer by nearly two seconds in 52.65. While head-and-shoulders out front in terms of the clock -- with a lightning-quick 49.27s -- 30-year-old Oakville native Vince and Catch 22 took down the fourth rail in the jump-off and had to settle for third. Grinyer and Vince collected $15,500 and $9,500 respectively for their top-three finishes -- marking the best World Cup qualifying effort ever for Grinyer and the best this season for Vince. Perth, Ontario's Amy Millar --daughter of Captain Canada Ian Millar -- rounded out the jump-off, placing fourth with Sweet Dreams. Catch 22 has a tendency to be very sensitive on soft footing, which sparked plenty of concern for Vince heading into Sunday's grand prix. "I thought there'd be big problems with all the rain the day before, and was quite worried," she said. However, Catch 22 had just one minor hiccup overall and offered another reminder of why he's widely regarded as one of the speed demons on the grand prix circuit. Pleasantly surprised with horse "Speed's never really an issue with him," Vince explained of the 16-year-old Dutch warmblood. "He just lost his footing a bit there before the purple rail and didn't quite have the push needed to clear it. But, given the conditions, I was pleasantly surprised at how well he did." The oldest of three equestrian sisters, Vince said the chance to compete so close to home alongside Courtney, 27, and Sydney, 24 -- who both had 12 faults aboard Nalla and Uno -- made her strong finish that much more rewarding. The Vince clan will now focus its attention on the ongoing construction of a barn and ring at its family homestead that'll serve as the base for Ainsley's recently-established instructing business. 1395 Abbeywood Drive THIRD LINE OAKVILLE · 905-825-8357 ABBEYWOOD DR.
