The class could work as a team on a bibliography of recommended books for reading that support positive animal messages. Add this list to the school newsletter as a special feature for adults and children alike," commented White. Discussion groups offer another opportunity to share information about animals. Have a group discuss where (television, newspaper, radio, books, etc.) they learn about animals and what types of messages come from those media. Teaching appropriate animal treatment comes in many positive forms. Bringing a live animal into the classroom (often a Guinea pig or rabbit) however, may not be ideal for the animal or the learning experience. Sadly, the wrong message is often conveyed as teachers scramble to find willing families to take the classroom pet home for the weekend or vacation periods. It may give the impression that the animal is an after thought, rather than a priority. For those teachers that would like to leave the instruction to Humane Society staff, contact the Oakville and District Humane Society to schedule an age-appropriate presentation for your class. A variety of topics are offered including how to pick a pet, how to treat a pet, understanding wildlife and how to be safe around pets. Alternatively, children can sign up for an eight-week session of the Kindness Club. The Club meets Monday evenings at the shelter and is available PET OF THE WEEK: Zelda and Zazou are two beautiful Guinea pigs that are waiting for adoption. We have many small animals looking for homes. If you are thinking of getting one to add to your family, come and look at what we have available. More of our animals can be viewed on our website www.oakvillehumane.ca to pre-registered six to eight or nine to 12 year olds. "Children are naturally intrigued with animals," added White, "What better way to support learning than with a topic that engages so many of them in thought."
