Welcome to the 17th annual The Word On The Street festival, celebrating literacy in the heart of the city. Set for Sunday, Sept. 24, in Toronto, The Word On The Street "celebrates reading, promotes Canadian books and highlights the importance of literacy skills," says Alex Moorshead, director of The Word On The Street. It's the largest literary festival in Canada with over 200,000 people attending each year. This festival started out in 1990 when members of literary organizations decided to create a festival based on literacy. In its first year more than 40,000 people joined the festivities. It doesn't matter if you are two, 20 or even 80 years old. The Word On The Street has something for everyone. A host of stars and performers from TVOKids perform songs, music and dance. Be amazed by the mysterious Jay Sankey the magician as he conjures magical spells from his brand new TV show called Spellz on the TVO stage. The Citytv Main Stage will host music from Canadian musicians and singers all day. The Neilson Dairy Oh! Children's Reading Tent hosts famous authors. The authors will be presenting new books and reading excerpts from their enthralling tales on stage.
