Born in Lancashire, son of the late John and Mary Pennington. John was the Gold Medal winner for being top boy on leaving his local school. A keen sportsman, with an ambition to become a professional soccer player, he had trials with Everton F.C. and was on cloud nine when selected to play for their junior team on September 2, 1939. WWII intervened and prior to volunteering for the RAF in 1941 he served in the Homeguard. Having gone solo in 1941, John was sent to 33 SFTS Carberry, Manitoba and obtained his Pilot's Wings March 1942, rising to Flt. Lieutenant. He had a distinguished career in Bomber Command serving with 44 and 35 PFF Squadrons. He was awarded the D.F.C. and attended the investiture by King George VI in Buckingham Palace with his proud parents in attendance. He was also mentioned in dispatches and as a pilot rated excellent. This was recognized when he was chosen to pilot a special V.I.P. Lancaster on flights with the C. in C. Bomber Command and A.V.M.'s as passengers. John emigrated to Canada in 1947 and was employed for 34 years with Prudential of America in the investment and taxation fields. He also obtained his CPA in Manitoba and CA on amalgamation. John will be remembered by the family of his late sister-in-law in England and his nephews and nieces. He was a member of the Aircrew Association, RAF Association and 44 Squadron Association.
