Cancer survivor beats the odds By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Irish luck, prayers and a lot of people pulled Tricia Baxter from the abyss of death. The esoteric nature of the first two assets makes showing appreciation tough, but not the third. This Saturday, Sept. 16, the cancer survivor intends to do just that during fundraising festivities to be held at Monaghan's Sports Pub and Grill. On March 11, 2005 doctors told the mother of three that she had Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, a cancer of the blood-forming tissues in bone marrow. Immediately, Baxter was catapulted into the medical world of tests, treatment and months-long hospital stays. She wasn't expected to pull through, according to doctors. "I even managed to find peace with my fate and began to say `goodbye' to people," said Baxter. But the thought of not being able to see her children Mikayla, 16, Jacob, 15 and Declan, 12, through a lifetime of personal milestones rallied her resolve to defy the doctors' daunting prognosis. A community of unflagging supporters surrounded Baxter, her husband, John, and their children. Family, friends, neighbours, coworkers, acquaintances and strangers began to drop off groceries, gas vouchers and meals, and provide childcare, well wishes and foot rubs. Whatever other voids needed filling were, within short measure, completed.
