18 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 13, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Survivor plans to walk 21 kilometres in Toronto walkathon Continued from page 14 "I can't thank them all enough, but I intend to try," said the feisty 44-year-old. And one of those ways is by walking 21 kilometres in Toronto on Sept. 24 to raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLS). "I expect to finish," said Baxter. It's the same resolve that eliminated the wheelchair, walker and cane from her life. Last year, while Baxter struggled to live, four of her friends did the walk and raised $22,000 for LLS. Since May she's been training Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings with Earlene Purcell, Debby Brunelle, and Anne-Marie Doherty, her team mates in Tricia's Trekkers. "I never thought she would ever be able to do this walk with us," said Doherty. While the walk is focused on raising research, education and treatment dollars for LLS, it's also a celebration of the fact that the friends are still together too, said Doherty. This is also what inspired a repeat of the party held at Monaghan's Sports Pub and Grill. Saturday's event promises entertainment for children and adults alike including a silent auction, door prizes, and performances by the talented crew at the Goggin-Carroll School of Irish Dance are included. The afternoon fun runs from 2 6 p.m. and tickets, $10 each or $25 per family are available at the pub, located at Trafalgar Road in the Rabba Plaza, or in advance by calling 905-338-6987 or 905 3387197. Those numbers make skin cancer the most common of all cancers. One in five will develop skin cancer sometime during their lifetime, a percentage that increases to one in three for Caucasians. Though protective products like sunscreen are available throughout the country, fewer than 33 percent apply sunblock before knowingly exposing their skin to sun. That's even more upsetting when considering that 90 percent of all skin cancer cases trace overexposure to sun as their chief cause. Despite a survival rate of 99 percent when detected early, melanoma is still the deadliest form of skin cancer, causing nearly 8,000 deaths per year.
