Russell scored a goal in Oakville's 2-0 victory. BARRIE ERSKINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER The Oakville Blue Devils got back into the win column last weekend, and not a moment too soon. Oakville earned only its second win in its past 10 contests Sunday at Bronte Athletic Field, blanking the Toronto Supra Portuguese 2-0 to improve its record to 8-5-6. The Blue Devils' victory also maintained their hold on first place in the Canadian Soccer League's National Division, a position they have held since the opening month of the season. "We needed that," Oakville head coach Phil Ionadi admitted. "We've been tying a lot of... the past five to six games. Getting that first goal is so important because when you get that goal, you open up the other team's defence." Midfielder Andy Garcia provided the opening goal in Sunday's affair, converting a shot from close range in the 20th minute. The Blue Devils had several opportunities to pad their lead but weren't able to open up any breathing room until Gavin Russell's insurance marker with 11 minutes left in regulation. Oakville owns a one-point lead on the Laval Dynamites for top spot in the National Division and has one game in hand on the Quebec-based squad. Laval's remaining games will both be against the Serbian White Eagles, who lead the International Division with a 13-1-2 mark. Ionadi is more concerned with the 7-7-3 Brampton Stallions, who are eight points behind Oakville but have two games in hand. That said, if the Blue Devils win at least two of their three remaining games, they will likely hold onto first place and earn home-field advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. Home to Supra tomorrow Oakville got a major scheduling break as a game against Toronto Supra, initially slated for Friday in Toronto, was moved to tomorrow at Bronte (the Supra's home field is under construction). Game time had not been determined as of yesterday, but will likely be approximately 8 p.m. The Blue Devils will also face the North York Astros and London City, two sub-.500 teams, to conclude the year, though Ionadi isn't taking anything for granted. "In this league, it's very difficult to look at standings and say `this team should win'," he said. "Sometimes, whoever comes out and works harder wins the game. We never take opponents too lightly." Oakville recently lost two of its top scorers as Judah Hernandez traveled to Belgium for a tryout with a professional team and Sam Hassam left the squad for undisclosed reasons. Ionadi said the Blue Devils' recently-formed affiliation with Oakville Wisla United, a local men's team currently leading its division in the Ontario Soccer League, should prove beneficial in plugging those holes. -- Jon Kuiperij can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com. Vanderjagt misses season opener When the Dallas Cowboys signed Oakville native Mike Vanderjagt in the NFL offseason, they figured they had found a cure for their place-kicking woes. The only problem is, Vanderjagt needs to be on the field to make a difference -- and he wasn't in uniform for the Cowboys' season opener last weekend in Jacksonville. The 36-year-old White Oaks grad was forced to miss the game due to a lingering groin injury, meaning second-year pro Shaun Suisham handled the placekicking duties for the Cowboys Sunday. Suisham made a 32-yard field goal in the first half but hit the right upright on a 36-yard attempt later in the game. Dallas went on to lose 24-17 to the Jaguars. Vanderjagt is the NFL's all-time leader in field-goal percentage, making 87.5 per cent of his career attempts. He missed both of his kicks in the Cowboys' final preseason game, a 10-10 tie with the Minnesota Vikings, last month. Dallas used three different kickers last season and critical misses cost the Cowboys at least two potential victories. It is uncertain whether Vanderjagt will be activated for Dallas' next game, Monday night against the Washington Redskins. The Cowboys have a bye the following week, which would allow Vanderjagt some extra time to completely heal from the injury. -- Jon Kuiperij SPOTLIGHT Introducing....
