A marked decrease in membership and reduced participation from community sport groups, means the Oakville Sports Council is seriously looking at trouble. It will hold a public meeting is on Thursday, Sept. 28 at Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road, to discuss the future direction of the organization, to encourage participation and to recruit new members. "No one wants to see the Oakville Sports Council fold," said Cathy Watt, Chair of the Oakville Sports Council. "This council plays an important role in our sport community, but we seriously need more member participation to grow the organization and keep it active," said Watt. The public meeting will be a final attempt to revitalize the Oakville Sports Council and determine its future. Watt added that participation from the sport community is crucial for this meeting. The Sports Council wants to hear from local sport organizations and the public on the value of the organization and how to shape the council for the future. The Oakville Sports Council was re-established in 2000 and has served as the voice for sport in Oakville providing support to its "The council plays an important role in our sport community, but we seriously need more member participation to grow the organization and keep it active." The Sports Council consists primarily of sport organizations, but also accepts corporate and individual membership who may or may not be affiliation with a sports group. The council is managed by a volunteer board of directors and meets monthly. It also has a direct Town of Oakville staff liaison on its board and a representative on the Town of Oakville's Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. Food and refreshments will be provided from 6:30 7 p.m. at the meeting, which will begin at 7 p.m. in Committee Room 2.
