26 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 15, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Shockwaves from 9/11 attacks still being felt today By Maigan Santos GRADE 8, ST. JOAN OF ARC O n Sept. the 11th we remember the day that caused much sadness, despair and death. It was the day when many firefighters and police officers gave their lives in order to save others. It was the day when the World Trade Centre fell. The day was 9/11, Doom's Day. On Sept.11, 2001, the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists. Two passenger airplanes were hijacked and crashed into the world Trade Centre. The crashing of the planes caused a chain reaction in the Trade Center Buildings. After the planes crashed, they caught fire, and the intense heat generated by the crash melted the steel frame of the two massive buildings which then led to the collapse of the entire building, right to the ground. Both towers crumbled in less than an hour of being hit. Seeing the Trade Centre crashing to the ground, people in the area instantly ran from harm's way. Inside the building, many people fled and tried to run for their lives, while others stayed put waiting for direction and anticipating rescue. The few who did make it out of the building rejoiced in tears and thanked God that they were still alive. But they also knew that there were a lot of people who did not make it left inside. Firefighters, police officers and medics rushed onto the scene, helping the people trapped inside. Sadly, though, on this day 350 firefighters risked and lost their lives, but only 100 firefighters were on duty when the Trade Centre fell. This shows how loyal and brave a lot of men who volunteered were and that they were willing to risk their lives to save others. At the end of the day, on September 11, almost 3,000 people died. Family members and loved ones did not return home that night. People cried and grieved after hearing the news of their loved ones. Some wandered the streets aimlessly showing photos hoping that perhaps their loved one was just distraught and somewhere out there. To this day people remain saddened by the loss of loved ones and everyone who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Now, five years later, many events have since occurred. American and Canadian troops have been sent and are presently in Afghanistan. Sadly, many troops, both American and Canadian, have lost their lives in Afghanistan. The U.S. is at war in Iraq, with many American troops losing their lives. Many movies have come out about that tragic day, including telling the story of the flight where the men tried to rush the cockpit and steer the plane off course to prevent a crash. There is also discussion as to what should be built in place of the World Trade Centre. It is valuable real estate, but should a memorial be erected to remember the lives that were lost? Finally, remember to count your blessing each and every day and be thankful for all that you have and remember to pray and remember everyone who lost their lives on Sept.11, 2001. ublice P s arehouOn W SALE From Sept 11 to Oct 9, 2006 Small Appliances and Utensils up to up to 70 %* ff o ued ontin isc on d maged & da items box For a limited time get unlimited savings at La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries Factory Authorized Clearance. 50% OFF FOR * DO NOT PAY * 1 YEAR from Recliners $ * 399 from Sofas $ 799 * from Reclining Sofas $ * 1199 Tables & Lamps from $ * 99 CLEARANCE STORE HOURS M - F 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Sat 9 am to 1 pm, Closed Sundays SALE NOT OPEN TO TRADE.
