Much to the relief of his parents, Long returned safe and sound to Canada on Aug. 16 after completing a seven-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. After nearly seven months stationed in Afghanistan, Private Charlie Long is home. The 21-year-old T.A. Blakelock grad served his last day in Kandahar Aug. 16, and after a decompression period at his home base in Edmonton, arrived back in Oakville Sept. 6. "Coming back is just a totally surreal experience," said Long, smiling. "It's different really different. Your outlook on everything changes, and doing normal things again is just weird." As the number of Canadians killed in Afghanistan continues to climb 32 have lost their lives since 2002 and 16 Private Charlie Long of those casualties on patrol in Afghanistan occurred in the last three months Long's family, which includes his nine-month old son Jaxen, dad Doug, mom Rita, brother Patrick and stepsisters Aubrey and Alexandria, is feeling a huge sense of relief. "I spent literally every second of every day worrying about my son," said his dad, Doug Thompson. "You live on the edge 24 hours a day. When Charlie called to tell me he was in Dubai (his first stop on his way home), to know that he was finally safe was such an incredible rush."
