Artscene Oakville Beaver · FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2006 54 Young photographer combines his two passions By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Shell Park was Andrew Norton's daily summer hangout as a teenager, where he'd go for hours on end to practice his skateboarding tricks. Now, the 20-year-old is capturing the action. An Iroquois Ridge High School grad, Norton's first photography show ­ Get Rad ­ is now on display at Toronto's Adrift. Many of the pictures in the show, which has piqued a lot of interest from the skateboarding community, are of local skateboarders at Shell Park. "It's cool to give exposure to local guys I've grown up with," said Norton, who has also had photos published in Canadian skate magazines, SBC Skateboard and Concrete Powder. "I've never had a big show like this, it's really exciting." "Then I just kind of carried it around with me, taking pictures of everything. "Lots of bad rolls of film later," Norton added, he bought a camera of his own. "I really started at Shell Park, just taking pictures of my friends. Then I thought I should get my photography skills going." Now in his first year of photography at Ryerson University, Norton first attended the University of Western Ontario for its Media Information and Technoculture program, but found it was "too broad." It was at Western, though, that he started volunteering for the University's daily newspaper, The Gazette. "The editors were just kind of lazy seniors, so we got a lot of opportunities," he said. "They had big cameras and lenses, and that kind of got me interested.
