18 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 16, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com The MAY COURT CLUB of Oakville Message from... the President M ay Court was founded in Ottawa in 1898 by Lady Aberdeen, wife of the Earl of Aberdeen who was Governor General of Canada at the time. Lady Aberdeen was a woman born ahead of her time with very strong ideas about the role of women in society. As well as May Court she founded the Victorian Order of Nurses and the Council of Women. Today May Court is the oldest service club in Canada. The Oakville branch celebrates 50 years of service to our community with a membership approaching 200. The Club is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors and our projects are operated by member volunteers. The May Court Club of Oakville is all about making a positive impact on our community and in doing so we have supported a long list of causes, projects and progressive initiatives. We have representatives on the Boards of Carey House, the Miriam Group and Home Suite Hope and a volunteer contingent at Wellspring cancer support centre for Halton/Peel. Our major annual fund raising projects are the Nearly New Shop (opened in 1957 and currently located on Kerr Street), the Festival of Trees and Treasures with proceeds going to the VON Hospice Program and the Art and Artisans-by-the-Lake with proceeds going to Halton Women's Place, the Breast Cancer Support Services and The May Court Club of Oakville Scholarship Program. To celebrate our 50th Anniversary we have pledged $50,000 to Home Suite Hope and wait with great anticipation the building of a new innovative facility to serve women and children in a housing crisis. I am so proud to be a part of a volunteer organization that has shown such determination, foresight and hard work. Come join us and together we will continue to help serve and support those members of our community who are most vulnerable. www.maycourt.ca Message from... the Mayor n behalf of Council, the people of Oakville and myself, I am pleased to offer congratulations to the May Court Club for 50 years of service to our community. Celebrating five decades of empowering the community whilst exchanging fellowship that sustains the Oakville May Court Club, is truly an achievement worth commemorating. O Countless lives have been touched and changed for the better because of the selfless work of the Club's members. They continue to offer hope and opportunity through their involvement in community programs and their Nearly New Shop. Annually I have the pleasure of drawing the winning ticket in the Festival of Trees and Treasures in December with proceeds going to the VON Palliative Care Outreach, a program that provides dignity and support to people in the final stages of life and their families. Thank you for your dedication to our town: may the next 50 years see this tradition of service continue to bless equally those who benefit and provide.
