www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 16, 2006 - 29 The MAY COURT CLUB of Oakville ver the past half century, The May Court Club of Oakville has extended a hand of support to those who need it most. With numerous projects continuing to win public acclaim, The May Court Club of Oakville is still providing real solutions to our day's most pressing issues, never afraid to tackle the most difficult topics of the 20th and 21st centuries. With the recent events surrounding AIDS and HIV, The May Court Club of Oakville is particularly proud of the work they do with the Miriam Group. The Miriam Group provides support of all kinds to HIV infected and affected children and their families. "In 1995, our Club pledged $22,000 to help establish the Miriam Group and get them off the ground," says Barbara McLauchlin, President of The May Court Club of Oakville. Since this time, the club has had a member sit on the Miriam Group board and has donated an additional $38,000. "We are very pleased with our involvement with Miriam Group," says Barbara. "It is truly, a great partnership." To describe The May Court Club without involving the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) would be impossible, as the two organizations are very integrated and have been since Lady Aberdeen founded The May Court Club in 1898. This is also the same time that she started VON. After becoming aware of the www.maycourt.ca Dedicated to a better way of life for those in need O lack of medical services throughout Canada, realizing that medical training took many years and that help was needed at once, she established the VON. Their first assignment was in the Yukon at the Klondike Gold Rush. "Since the beginning, we have been extremely involved with The Victorian Order of Nurses," says Barbara. "May Court clubs across Ontario are integrated with VON they will always have our unfailing support." "Our volunteer involvement with VON is both physical and financial," explains Barbara. "We have donated money to the VON Hospice Program and we have partnered with them to provide $60,000 to their Alzheimer's Support Services at Sheridan College and with volunteers actively involved we have been behind them from the very beginning." Another very important project that The May Court Club of Oakville is actively involved with is helping to raise the level of awareness and help improve the homeless problem that exists in Oakville. "There is a very real homeless crisis in Oakville," says Barbara. "Many people might not realize that there are women, men and children throughout our community in need of help with nowhere to live." Together with Home Suite Hope (an organization devoted to provide transitional housing and support to stabilize the lives of homeless people) The May Court Club has been working to build housing that will accommodate women and children in need keeping them in their own community and close as possible to familiar surroundings. With their focus on women and children in Oakville, The May Court Club of Oakville is also actively working on the concern of bullying in schools. "By incorporating the work of volunteer puppeteers, The May Court Club has been welcomed into numerous public and private schools throughout Halton to present `Stop The Bullying Buster Bean'. "The puppets are incredible creations," says Barbara. "Through them we are able to speak directly to the children in a way that adults rarely can. The entire play is presented in their language and on their level, and it offers not just practical responses to bullying, but also a feeling that if you are or have been bullied, you are not alone." Another way The May Court Club reaches out to children in need is through their Lunchbox program. The May Court Club has been delivering non-perishable nutritious snacks for identified children in elementary schools in Oakville and Burlington since 1991. "Wonderful and dedicated members of our Club identify where the needs are, purchase juice, crackers, cheese and granola bars and make sure that the schools have supplies on board when the needs arise," says Barbara. With a rich and powerful history, The May Court Club firmly follows the guidance of Lady Aberdeen. She was a world figure. Her intelligence and great compassion made her see the needs of humanity. Her ability, enthusiasm and persuasions enlisted help to find a problem's solution. Her tenacity and industry got the job done. With Lady Aberdeen as a role model to all involved in The May Court Club, it is no wonder that the club has helped so many people and organizations in need and continues to focus on the most difficult of problems. With their "not afraid to tackle the toughest issues" attitude Oakville is lucky to have this brave and determined group of women working for a better Oakville and a better way of life for many.
